To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. LAMPHIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ishing-Rod Cases or Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in holders or cases for sectional fishing rods.

The objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved holder or case for sec tional fishin rods which is very compact and one whic at the same time fully supports and protects the rod; second, to provide an improved holder or case for fishing-rods adapted for use as a display device, whereby all of the sections of the fishing-rod are properly displayed when the case is open; third, to provide an improved holder or case for fishing-rods which is very convenient and attractive as a display-case or as a carrying case or holder, at the same time one which is economical to manufacture.

Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described .inthe following specification.

The invention is clearly defined, and pointed out in the claims.

A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fishing-rod holder or case closed. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof open with a fishing-rod in position therein. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of my improved fishing-rod case or holder open. Fig. 4 is a cross-section with the casing closed, taken on a line corresponding to line 4 4 of Figs. 1 and 2, the fishing-rod being shown in position therein. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modified construction of the interior of my improved fishin -rod case, central and end supports or pociets being provided for the rod-sections instead of a continuous support or pocket, as illustrated in the other figures. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a modified construction, the case being made up of two sections instead of four, as is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive.

In the drawings similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the end of the section-lines.

Referring to the drawings, my improved fishing-rod case or holder 1s preferably made up of four sections A, A, A, and A. These sections are preferably quarter-round strips, hinged together edge to edge, so that they may be folded upon each other into a circular form, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or may be opened out side by side, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5. This hinging is preferably accomplished by securing the strips directly to the cover B, which is preferably of leather. This obviates the necessity of providing other hinges and affords an inexpensive and attractive way of securing the sections together.

The cover B is provided with a closing-flap at one edge which has strap extensions B.

Buckles B are provided for the straps.

I have illustrated my improved case or holder as adapted to a sectional rod, made up of three sections 0, D, and E, with an extra tip-section E as is the custom to furnish with high-class rods. The rod-sections are arranged in suitable pockets formed in the casesections, so that they are effectively supported in the casing and inclosed thereby. At the same time when the casing is open they are readily accessible and open to View. To accomplish this, I form a pocket for the buttsection C of the rod by grooves or seats 0, formed in each of the case-sections, as is indicated in the drawings, the main portion of the pocket being formed in the meeting or adjacent faces of the case-sections A A. The sections A and A are grooved at one end to accommodate the handle of the rod, as clearly appears in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A pocket is formed for the central section D of the rod in the meeting or adjacent faces of the casing-sections A and A by the grooves d. A pocket is formed for one of the tip-sections, as E, by the grooves e in the adjacent or meeting faces of the case-sections A A. A pocket is formed for the second tip-section by the grooves e in the outer'casesections A A near their outer edge. With the pockets thus disposed the casing-sections may be folded together, entirely inclosing the rod-sections and supporting them, each in its pocket. a

Notch like chambers opening into the pockets are provided to receive the runners f of'the rod. The parts by this arrangement are supported so that they are held out of contact with each other when the case is closed, and at the same time when the case is open are most effectively supported for display purposes, being supported so that they may be readily viewed in the case or removed therefrom, as desired.

In the modified construction shown in Fig. '5 the main portion of the casing-sections are chambered out, there being only bridge-like supports F at the center and at each end of the casing. The weight of the structure is lessened by thus forming the parts, and, if desired, this casing may be formed of metal 4 and still be comparatively light.

In the modified construction shown in Fig. 6 the casing is made up of two half-round sections H and H in which the pockets are formed. The structure illustrated, however, has only pockets for three rod-sections. In this structure the sections are shown secured together by the hinges it instead of being hinged together by the cover. The rodsections are preferably lined with cloth.

It is evident that my invention is capable of other variations in structural details, and as these will readily appear to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates I have not attempted to illustrate or describe them herein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1, In a case or holder for fishing-rods, consisting of the four casing-sections, formed of one-quarter-round strips; a cover of flexible material, to which said strips are secured edge to edge, whereby they are hinged together and may be folded into a roll, said cover projecting at one'side to form a closingflap, and having securing-strap extensions; securing-buckles for said straps, said sections having supports therein adapted to receive the rod-sections formed by complementing grooves in their adjacent or meeting portions when in their closed position; and chambers adapted to receive the runners of the rod opening into the said pockets, substantially as described,

A case or holder for fishing-rods, consisting of casing-sections, formed of one-quarterround strips, hinged together edge to edge so that they may be folded together into a roll, said sections having supports formed therein, adapted to receive the rod-sections, and having chambers adapted to receive the runners of the rod opening into the said pockets, for the purpose specified.

10. A case or holder for fishing-rods, consisting of casing-sections, formed of onequar ter-round strips, hinged together edge to edge so that they may be folded together into a roll, said sections having supports formed therein, adapted to receive the rod-sections,

for the purpose specified.

11. A case or holder for fishing-rods consisting of longitudinal sections; a cover of flexible material to which said sections are secured edge to edge, whereby they are hinged together and may be folded into a roll, said sections having supports adapted to receive the rodsections, said cover projecting at one side to form a closing-flap, for the purpose specified.

12. A case or holder for fishing-rods consisting of longitudinal sections; and a cover of flexible material to which said sections are secured edge to edge, whereby they are folded together and may be folded into a roll, said sections having supports adapted to receive the rod-sections, for the purpose specified.

13. A case or holder for fishing-rods consisting of longitudinal sections hinged together, said sections having supports therein adapted to receive the rod-sections; and a cover for said sections secured to the rear portions thereof and extended at one end to form a closing-flap, for the purpose specified.
