Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. E. BLOOD, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,308, dated July 21, 1874; application filed May 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. E. BLooD, of New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and'useful Improvement in Paper and other Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, ref: erence being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, Fig. 3 a side or front view, Fig. 4 a transverse section, and Fig. 5 an end view, of my improved box.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in paper and other boxes; and it consists of two cylinders, the inner one of which has a lateral opening, and a removable and a stationary head, having flanges for contin ing the second or outer one thereon, which is also provided with a lateral opening to mesh with the corresponding opening of the inner cylinder, by which the contents of the box thus formed may be removed, the outer cylinder being susceptible of being revolved upon the inner one, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, C refers to an inner cylinder or box, having a lateral, oblong, or other suitably-shaped opening, G, and supplied with a stationary and a removable head, 1), the latter being designed to permit of the box or cylinder being filled. The heads D D are supplied with flanges d d, the object of which will be seen hereinafter. E refers to an outer cylinder, having a lateral opening, F, which corresponds in shape to that in cylinder C, and surrounding the latter, upon which it is confined, so as to be preventedfrom having endwise movement, by the flanges d d.
To remove a part or the whole of the contents of the inner cylinder or box, revolve the outer one, E, until its opening F is brought-in a line with the opening Gin the first-named cylinder, which will expose to view the said contents, after which, and the contents, or a part thereof, as required, have been removed, revolve the outer cylinder until the opening in the inner one is concealed from view, and the box is closed.
I am aware that boxes for holding powder, 850., have been made in two parts or halves, one having a recess and the other a series of perforations, to open and close which the said parts are grasped and revolved in opposite directions, or one held stationary and the other revolved until the said recess and one or more of the said perforations are brought opposite each other.
In this device the wear and friction produced by taking the parts of the box apart and putting them together in filling it are brought to bear at the points where they are held together, which tends soon to render the box worthless, while in the use of my device the wear, Cm, are distributed over the opening and closing cylinder, and upon the removable and station-a1 heads. Neither is there any provision in this device to prevent the parts of the box from accidentally turning by .contact with the pocket of the carrier or by the motion of the body, while this end is.
attained in my device by the flanges on the cylinder-heads.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the pack ing case or box herein shown and described, consisting of the cylinder C, provided with a lateral opening, G, and a stationary and a removable head, D l) d, and the outer revolving cylinder E, provided with a lateral opening, F, substantially as set forth.
CHAS. F. E. BLOOD.
