INV l 70H d my Armement NITE STATES PATENT rrrcs.
WORK-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,652, dated March 30, 1897. Application tiled September 14, 1896. Serial No. 605,785. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTHONY PHERsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Work-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of Y reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to ladies work-boxes5 and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which comprises a suitable box or casing having a hinged box-shaped cover provided with pivoted spool-racks, which are designed to hold spools of thread, the construction and arrangement being such that when the box is open or the cover raised the racks will be held in such position that the spools may be removed therefrom or placed thereon.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my imj proved work-box with the cover raised and thrown back; Fig. 2, a transverse section adjacent to one end with the cover closed, and Fig. 3 a sectional detail on the line 3 3 ot' Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a box or casing 5, which is preferably oblong and rectangular in form and which may be composed of any desired material. The box or casing is provided with a hinged box-shaped cover 6, the depth of which is about that of the thickness of the largest spool of thread, and secured to one end of said cover and to the inner side thereof is a metal plate 7, and a similar metal plate 8 is secured to the opposite end, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. I also provide spool-racks 9 and 10, each of which consists of a plate 11, provided with rods or pins 12, and the plates 11 are pivoted between the end plates 7 and 8, and said plates 11 of the spool-racks are each provided at one end with a cross-head 13, each of which is provided with a backward ly-directed-flange 14, to which the plates 11 are secured, and said cross-heads 13 project backwardly and which is curved at each end and passed through said cross-heads, as shown at 16, so as to form a pivoted connection, andthe crosshead 13 of the plate 11 of the rack 10, which is situated adjacent to the hinges 16 of the cover, is provided with an arm 17, which is of the form of an ogee curve and which is provided with a longitudinal slot 1S, which is similar in form, and secured to the adjacent end of the box or casing 5 is a headed pin 19, which passes through said slot.
In practice the pins 12 of the rack 10 are preferably made longer than those of the rack 9, so as to accommodate spools of greater length; but this arrangement is not essential, and the pins of the rack 9 maybe made longer than those of the rack 10, if desired.
' The spools are placed upon the pins 12 of each'of the racks, as will be readily understood, and when the 'cover of the box or casing is raised and turned backwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1 the pins 12 will project vertically and the spools may be removed or placed on said pins whenever desired; and when the cover is closed the racks are turned backwardly in such manner that the pins 12 Vthereof Aproject parallel with the end pieces of the cover and about centrally thereof, as shown at the right of Fig. 2, and no matter how the box'or casing is handled when the cover is closed the spools cannot come oft' or be det-ached from the racks, the outer side 19 of the cover serving to retain the spools on the rack 9, and the plate 11 of the rack 9 serving to retain the spools on the rack 10.
The above-described movement of the racks is accomplished by means of the arm 17, and the rod l5, which is pivotally connected with the cross-head 13, and the box or casing, is also preferably provided with a longitudinal partition 20, but said box or casing may be divided in any desired manner, and the separate compartments formed therein may be used as receptacles for articles of various kinds and classes.
My improved work-box may be made of any desired material and of any desired shape or form, and it is evident that changes in and modiiications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of' my invention or sacricing its upwardly and are connected by a rod 15, ladvantages.
ICO
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A box or case constructed as herein de scribed, and provided with a hinged box shaped cover in which are pivoted spool racks, said spool-racks being pivotally eonnected by means of a rod, and one of said racks being provided at the end thereof, with an arm in which is formed a slot, through which projects a pin secured to the end of the box, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A box or case constructed Vas herein described, and provided with a hinged boxshaped cover in which are pivoted spoolracks, said spool-racks being pivotally connected by means of a rod, and one of said racks being provided at the end thereof, with an arm in which is formed a slot, through which projects a pin secured to the end of the box, said racks consisting of longitudinal plates provided with pins which projectupwardly when the cover is turned back, and
which are folded within said cover, when the latter is closed, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The herein-described work-box comprising a body portion which is rectangular in form, and provided with a hinged cover which is similar in form, said cover being provided with pivoted spool-racks arranged longitudinally thereof, and pivot-ally connected by means of a rod at one end thereof, and one of said racks being provided with a curved arm in which is formed a curved longitudinal slot, through which projects a pin secured to the adjacent end of the box, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this lith day of September, 1890.
ANTHONY IIIERSON.
