NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER A. LORENZ AND WILLIAM T. CALLAGHAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-DEPOSIT BOX.
To all whom 'tt may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER A. LORENZ and WILLIAM T. CALLAGHAN, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Deposit Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to metal cases of the class which are used in banks, safety deposit vaults and the like, in which a considerable numberI of pigeonholes are framed together, each being provided with a door and adapted to receive boxes or other receptacles which may be placed therein for storage and safe keeping.
It is the object of our invention to provide a solid and substantial structure of the class described, which shall be simple in construction and not liable to injury or disarrangement of its parts, and to provide doors for the several compartments so constructed and hinged that they become practically a part of the structure itself.
The principles of our invention are illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one tier of pigeon holes removed from its relation with other similar ones; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing in addition a number of such tiers in their proper relation; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a vertical section on the line 4-41 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 shows a top and side view of a pigeon hole partition.
Further describing our invention with reference to the drawings, 1 is a supporting base to which the several tiers constructed as hereinafter described, are secured.
2 2, etc., are sheets of metal placed horizontally, each one of which forms respectively the top and base of the pigeon holes above and below it.
6 6 are vertical partitions provided at their rear ends with the integrally formed sleeves or hollow beads 7 each of which should be provided with the notch 8. The other end of each of said partitions has a similar construction except that the sleeve is not continuous, but forms the interrupted loops 9.
The partitions 2 2, etc., are perforated at proper distances and the rear edges thereof are turned downward to form right angled flanges 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 407,802.
Doors 11, formed of sheet metal, are provided with loops 12, adapted to alternate with the loops 9 9 on the partition 6 so that the central openings will be in alinement.
In assembling the several parts of the de vice the rear framing rods 13 are passed through the openings in the base; then through the sleeve 7 and the openings in the horizontal partitions 2. When riveted at the upper and lower ends the parts will t-hus be rigidly secured together. Similar framing rods 13 are passed through the openings in the base, then through the loops in the doors, `and the corresponding loops in the front ends of the partitions, and through the horizontal divisions as before described.
When secured at top and bottom such fram ing rods give secure adjustment to the parts, and also form the pintle of hinges in which the loops 9 and 12 are the knuckles. The notches 8 in the sleeve 7 should be of such depth and dimensions as to hold the downturned Hanges 3 and to permit the back faces thereof to be flush with the ends of the partitions. Said flanges thus form a means for attaching the back 14 by means of t-he rivets 15 which are passed through suitable openings in said hack and flanges.
We claim:
1. In a safety deposit box` having relatively ixed back and horizontal members, compartment partitions having loops at their ends, doors having loops at one end adapted to alternate with the loops on the partitions to form hinged knuckles and pintles passed through the said loops.
2. In a safety deposit box having relatively fixed back and horizontal members, compartment partitions running from front to rear provided with loops at one end, doors having corresponding loops alternately placed with those on the partitions so as to form hinged knuckles, and pintles passed through the said loops.
3. In a safety deposit box having horizontal members and vertical partitions, said vertical partitions being provided with loops at their outer ends; the combination therewith of doors each having loops at one end adapted to be alined with the said loops on the partitions to form hinged knuckles, and framing rods to hold the horizontal partitions together passed through the loops in said knuckles to form pintles for the hinges.
4c. A safety deposit box comprising the sleeves at their ends,
sleeves and horizontal members, und doors having interrupted sleeves at one end adapt.- ed to alternate With the sleeves on the troni: end of said partitions and to hinge on the, framing rod,
In Witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands, this 19th day of December A. D. 1907, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
