UNION-PAJAMAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 2,1917.
Application filed October 20, 1913. Serial No. 796,188.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURR C. S'rErHENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union-Pajamas of which the following is a specification.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a union pajama in which upper and lower garments are connected to permit the garments having the appearance of the usual two-piece garment, the rear portion of the trousers being formed to provide a detachable flap, and the garment as a whole opening when desired from the neck to the crotch portion.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the garment as in use, the lower part of the trouser portion being broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the front part of the coat portion raised and also showing the front opening in the trouser. portion. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionpartly broken away illustrating particularly the rear flap construction. Fig. 4
is a broken rear elevation of the garment showing the depending part of the coat portion raised and the flap partly open.
The improved union pajama, as will be apparent from the drawings, embodies the usual upper garment or coat 1 and the lower garment or trousers 2, and each garment, ex-
' cept in the specific details hereinafter noted,
being of any usual or preferred construction or arrangement.
The upper marginal edge 3 of the trousers portion is united to the coat portion by stitching 4, the trouser portion being secured to the inner side of the coat portion and at in use.
some distance above the lower end of such coat portion, the arrangement providing for the proper support of the trouser portion from the coat portion when the garment is The coat portion is as usual, open throughout the full length of the front, while the trouser portion is. as usual, provided with an opening 5 in line with the front coat opening, so that by virtue of these two openings the union garment as an entirety may be open from the neck to the crotch portion, permitting the convenient application or removal of the garment from the person. To facilitate the opening of the trouser portion, the connection of the upper margin of the trouser portion and the coat does not extend to the marginal edge of the opening 5, but terminates some distance short of said edge to thereby permit convenient handling of'the material in buttoning or unbuttoning the opening.
The trouser portion throughout the rear breadth thereof is in the form of a flap 6 which of course is stitched at its upper marginal edge to the coat portion, depending therefrom to a point some distance above the lower edge of the coat portion and being otherwise wholly free of connection with the coat portion. The rear portion of the pajamas coincident with that of the flap 6 is in the form of a drop seat 7 having a length to extend above the lower edge of the flap 6, the'edge division of the drop seat with respect to the trousers proper being such as to permit said drop seat to be folded downwardly to form an opening in the garment. The upper edge of the drop seat is provided with button holes 8 and buttons 9 are approximately secured to the flap 6, permitting the drop seat to be secured in raised or elevated position'with the efi'ect to complete the trousers portion of the garment. In this connection it will be obviousfrom the drawings that that portion of the coat beneathrthe line of connection between the coat and trousers will overlie and conceal the drop seat, flap, and attaching means, so that the garment in use presents the ordinary appearance of the usual two-piece garment, though when constructed as described it obviates the use of the usual draw string and avoids inconvenience and discomfort attendant upon the separate constructions of the respective garments.
What is claimed is A pajama having a coat and trousers combined to form a one-piece garment, the trousers having a fly front, a closed crotch, a slack seat, and a dropseat flap, the openings at the sides of such seat-flap being in the body portion of the" trousers and ending above the crotch, and the coat havinga, skirt falling over such fly front and side openings of the trousers, the back of the coat being provided, under such skirt, with an attaching band for the drop seat-flap, such band being so located that it normally occupies a position on the wearer below his waist line.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
BURR C. STEPHENSON.
