OIL-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Dee, 199 1936,
Application filed March 1, 1915. Serial No. 11,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL JOHANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherry Grove, Washington county, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oil cans, and especially to such oil cans as are used for lubricating cross-cut saws.
The objects of my invention are: first to provide an oil can that may be readily attached to a tree or log in such a position as to supply oil, drop by dropyto a cross-cut saw; second to provide an oil can that shall perform the above function without the attention of the operator or any other person; third to provide such an oil can that may be cheaply constructed, easily handled and used, and economical of oil. I
I attain the above objects by means of the device disclosed in these specifications, defined in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which therefore becomes a part of this specification for Letters Patent, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention in use as applied to a log being sawed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of my invention in use, illustrating adifferent position of same from that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is an elevation of my invention in use, illustratin'g a different position of 'same from those shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the oil can being here shown supported upon an ax handle.
Like characters designate like parts throughout the various figures upon the drawing, in which- Numeral 1 is the oil can body, 2 a handle attached to said body, and 3 a plug cock adapted to be adjusted to allow oil to drip drop by drop as slowly or as rapidly as desired. A screwed top 4 is provided for filling the can, said top having a small orifice 5' for the double purpose of admitting air into the can as oil is removed through cock 3, and also for use in spraying a quantity of oil upon the saw before commencing operations. Said spraying of oil through orifice 5 is accomplished by holding the can inverted by handle 2 and giving to the can a violent reciprocating motion. The can is provided with a sharp spike member 6, secured to the can, and adapted to be forced into a log 17 and support the can,in position, as illustrated in Fi 2. A similar sharp spike member 7, o curved contour, is provided, and attached to the can above the spike member 6, said member 7 being adapted to be forced into a tree trunk 18 and this to support the can in position above the saw,
as shown in Fig. 3.
A clamp is provided, consisting of rods 8, nuts 9 thereon, a bar 10 upon said rods and having a portion 11 curved to fit an ax handle, and a metal strip 12 conveniently secured to the can and having a curved por tion 13 to fit an ax handle. Said strip 12 and spike members 6 and 7 are formed of a single piece of material as shown in Fig. 1.
.wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all mechanical equivalents which may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as disclosed in these specifications and defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention so that others skilled in the art may be enabled to construct and use same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with an oil can, of a single strip of metal secured to said oil can in such a manner as to extend parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof, rods secured to said strip and extending outwardly at right angles thereto, the outer ends of said rods being formed with screw threads, a bar formed with openings adjacent its extremsuch strip being formed with a curved portion approximately intermediate the ends, rods secured to said strip and extending outwardly at right angles thereto, the outer ends of said rods being formed with screw threads, a bar formed with openings between its extremities, and being provided with a curved portion, the rods being adapted to project through said openings 10 and means engaging the screw threads whereby, upon the actuation thereof, to impart movement of the bar along the rods.
In testimony that I claim the above as my own, I hereunto attach my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CARL J OHANSON.
