LUKE KIRAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 19M.
Application filed July 28, 1916. Serial No. 111,889.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LUKE KIRAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved can opener, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, is strong and durable, by means of which the cover of a can may be removed by cutting around the side walls adjacent the top edges; another object being to provide an improved device of this character which is adjustable to any shape or size of can.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a can opener constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a detail inverted plan view.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a handle 1 which is hollow, and the bore or opening 2 of which is open at the inner end and extends to within a suitable distance of the outer end of the handle. Near its inner end on its outer side, the ban dle is provided with a set screw 3. On the inner side or bottom of the handle, also near its inner end is a cutter. 4 which is preferably of the form here shown, providing two opposite cutting edges 5, the cutter is provided with a threaded stud 6, which is screwed in a threaded opening 7 in the handle and hence the cutter is detachably secured to the handle at a point near the opposite set screw and can be removed therefrom and another substituted, when the cutter is worn, broken, or dull. v
I also provide an arm 8 which is slidably fitted in the handle and which may be secured at any desired adjustment by means Gopies of this patent may be obtained for of the set screw. The arm is provided at its projecting end, on its under side with a pivot 9 which has an outwardly bent point 10. The point may be readily thrust through the top of a can, at a point near the center. The handle is then adjusted on the arm according to the size of the can and the handle may be then grasped and by means thereof the cutter may be revolved around the top of the can and caused to cut out the same as will be readily understood, said arm and the handle turning on the plvot.
It will be observed that the cutter is at right angles to the handle and arm and hence is adapted to out directly in the top of the can.
It will also be observed that the arm is arranged between and in contact with the opposing ends of the set screw and threaded stud so that when the arm is in the described adjusted position and is clamped by the set screw, the arm is also clamped against the inner end of the stud, effectually preventing the latter and hence also the cutter from casually turning. When the set screw is released from the arm the threaded stud is no longer clamped and the cutter may be then readily removed and replaced.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
A can opener comprising a hollow handle provided with a clamping screw and also provided with a cutter at right angles to the handle andhaving a threaded stud engaged in a threaded opening in the handle and arranged substantially opposite the inner end of the screw, and an arm slidably fitted in the handle and having a pivoting point at its outer end the arm being also arranged between the opposing ends of the set screw and threaded stud and in contact therewith so that when the arm is clamped by the set screw the arm is also clamped against the inner end of the threaded stud and thereby it more firmly secures the cut ter in place on the handle.
- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LUKE KIRAL.
