Description

A. J. GREEN.
WASHER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 8,1913,
Patentd Jan. 12, 1915.
awumtoz' ARTHUR J'. GREEN, 0]? ORENCO, OREGON.
WASHER.
Application filed July 8, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orenco, in the county of Washington and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to washers especially adapted to be used upon scythe snathes for the purpose of holding the handle grips against rotation with relation to the snathes; and the device consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Under the present practice considerable difiiculty is experienced in so securing the handle grip upon the snathe of a scythe in order to prevent the same from turning or rotating with relation to the axis of the snathe when the scythe is in use. The washer hereinafter described is designed to restrain the handle grip from such turning movement upon the snathe and it consists of a sheet metal body curved slightly to fit snugly against the side of the snathe and having tangs adapted to be forced into the wood of the snathe. The said washer is also provided with an elongated opening which receives a portion of the eye of the pin upon which the handle grip of the scythe is mounted.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a scythe snathe with the washer applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the washer. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
The washer includes a body 1 formed preferably from sheet metal and preferably circular in configuration The said washer is bowed or curved transversely in order that it may fit snugly against the periphery of the scythe snathe. Tangs 2 are punched from the material of the body 1 and are adapted to be forced in the grain of the scythe snathe whereby the said washer is restrained against turning movement upon the scythe.
The body 1 is provided with an elongated opening 3 which is located between the Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

tangs 2 and which extends along the line of curvature of the bowed portion of the body 1. This opening 3 receives the edge portion of an eye 4 which surrounds the scythe snathe and which is connected with a pin 5 upon which the handle grip 6 is mounted. Therefore when the bur at the outer end of the pin 5 is tightened and the-handle grip 6 is moved longitudinally along .the said pin the tangs 2 are forced into the grain of the wood of the scythe snathe and consequently the eye 4 is held against rotation with relation to the snathe. The openings 7 left in the body 1 after the tangs 2 are' punched therefrom are disposed with their long di mensions approximately parallel with the long dimension of the opening 3. One tang 2 is bent down from the material of the body 1 at one end of the opening and the other tang 2 is bent down from the material of the body 1 at the opposite end of its opening 7. Therefore the said tangs 2 are not in alinement at right angle to the long dimension of the opening 3 and consequently they do not enter the grain of the wood of the snathe in alinement and for this reason there is not danger of splitting the snathe. The body 1 at the ends of the opening 3 therein is concaved as at 8 and the said concaved portions are adapted to fit over the eye 41- when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A washer especially adapted to be used for holding a handle grip upon the snathe, comprising a body having an elongated opening, said body being concaved or bowed longitudinally of the opening, said body J N0. A. MCGEE, ROY A. MCDOWELL.
