Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-r M. KARL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roslyn Heights, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stop-Catches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with doors and the like.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a stop-catch designed to be employed for limiting the movement of a door, or the shutter of a window and the like when swung open to suitable distances as well as for releasably retaining, the door,
or shutter in open positions, the device also serving to prevent the knob of the door from damaging the adjacent wall by contacting therewith, and for serving to prevent the shutter when used thereon from rattling during windy weather. This is accomplished mainly by providing a tubular member having an angularly projecting arm, adapted to be fastened to a support in the path of movement of a door whereby the tubular member may be spaced a suitable distance from the support, and adapted to be secured on the door is a cooperating member with two spaced extensions to freely accommodate the tubular member therebetween, the extensions having recesses in opposed relation to the open ends of the tubular member. Movable in the open ends of the tubular member are two substantially spherical locking elements normally disposed partially out of the tubular member for being releasably seated in the recesses of the cooperating member when the door is opened a distance whereby the door will be held against movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide in the tubular member between the locking elements a spring, or resilient element serving to yieldingly force the locking elements outwardly of the open ends of the tubular element.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stop catch of a simple, efficient and durable construction, and which may be made in any desired size.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In thedrawing, Figure 1 is a fragmentary detail sectional view, showing a door and 1ts support with one form of stopcatch embodying my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stop-catch. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 4:. Fig. 4: is a top plan of the stop-catch, and Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line VV of Fig. 2.
The device, or stop catch has a tubular member 10 and a complemental cooperating recessed member, as 11. The tubular meniber 10 may be of any desired diameter and length, and projecting angularly preferably from the central part of the tubular member is an arm 12 to form this member in substantially a T-shape. The arm 12 is of a length so as to space the tubular member proper a suitable distance from a support, as 12, to which a door, as 1 1, or the shutter of a window, and the like may be hingedly swung, and the free end part of this arm, in practice, is secured to the support by any desired means, for instance by a screw, as 15, so that the tubular member will be in the path of the door when swung open.
The cooperating member 11 may be approximately Ushaped to provide a transverse plate 16 from which two extensions 17 and 18 are disposed in right angular directions, and these extensions are spaced from. each other a distance to freely accommodate the tubular member 10 therebetweon. Through the transverse plate 16 of the U- shaped member 11 may be a number of holes 19 to permit the member to be fastened to the door by screws, or otherwise in a position in opposed relation to the tubular member so that the U-shaped member will straddle the tubular member on the door being swung open a suitable distance, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and the parts of the extensions 17 and 18 of the U-shaped member in opposition to the open ends of the tubular member are respectively recessed, at 20 and 21, for being registered with the open ends of the tubular member and for reception of locking elements 22 and 23 which are yicldingly movable in the open ends of the tubular member 10 whereby the U-shaped member and the tubular member may be releasably held together.
The locking elements 22 and 23 are preferably substantially spherical in shapes. These spherical locking elements are normally arranged to partially protrude from the open ends of the tubular member, and to prevent the locking elements from accidental displacement in the tubular member its open ends are slightly reduced in diameter.
In order to yieldingly force the locking elements 22 and 23 outwardly of the tubular member for being seated in the recesses 20 and 21 of the U-shaped member, in the tubular member between the locking elements there is a resilient element, or spring, as 24. This spring is tensioned so that when the device is applied to a door and its support, as above explained, and the door is swung open for the locking elements to be seated in the recesses of the U-shaped member 11, the engagement between the locking elements and the extensions 17 and 18 of the Ushaped member will serve to releasably hold the door open. Moreover, by making the arm 12 of the member 10 of sufiicient length, the door will be spaced from an adjacent wall to prevent it from being damaged by contact of the door knob there with, and when the device is employed in a similar manner for releasably holding a window shutter open it will also serve to prevent the shutter from rattling during Windy weather.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 2- 1. In a stop-catch of the character described, a tubular member adapted to be secured on a support to which is hinged a door or the like, a complemental member adapted to be fastened on the door, the said complemental member having two spaced recesses for registration with the open ends of the tubular member when the door is swung open, and two yieldingly movable locking elements in the tubular member, one partially protruding from each open end of the tubular member so as to be seated in the recesses of the recessed member when the recesses and the open ends of the tubular member are in register, for the purpose specified.
2. In a stop-catch of the character described,a tubular member having a projecting arm adapted to be secured on a support to which is hinged a door or the like so that the tubular member will be spaced from the support, a complemental member adapted to be fastened on the door, the said complemental member having two spaced eX- tensions to accommodate the tubular member therebetween, and the extensions having recesses for registration with the open ends of the tubular member when the door is swung open, and two yieldingly movable lockingelements in the tubular member, one partially protruding from each open end of the tubular member so as to be seated in the recesses of the recessed member when the recesses and the open ends of the tubular member are in register, for the purpose specified.
3. In a stop-catch of the character described, a tubular member adapted to be secured on a support to which is hinged a door or the like, a complemental member adapted to be fastened on the door, the said complemental member having two spaced recesses for registration with the open ends of the tubular member when the door is swung open, and two yieldingly movable substantially spherical locking elements in the tubular member, one partially protruding from each open end of the tubular member so as to be seated in the recesses of the recessed member when the recesses and the open ends of the tubular member are in register, for the purpose specified. 5. In a stop-catch of the-character described, a tubular member having an angularly projecting arm with means to secure the arm on a support to which is hinged a door, or the like so that the tubular member will be spaced from the support, a complemental member adapted to be fastened on the door the said complemental 'member being substantially U-shaped to provide two spaced extensions to freely accommodate the tubular member therebetween, and the two extensions having recesses for registration With the open ends of the tubular member When the door is swung open, two movable substantially spherical locking elements in the tubular member, one partially protruding from each open end of the tubular member so as to be seated in the recesses of the recessed member when the recesses and the open ends of the tubular member are in 12) register and a spring in the tubular member Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
