LOCK-STRIKE.
Ltll.
To all LU/0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN SIMLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Sikeston, in the county of Scott and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Strikes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful impro-vements in lock strikes and more particularly to an adjustable striking plate for locks and my object is to provide an improved device of this character which may be readily adjusted without removing the same from the door jamb or casing.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device consisting of an outer or stationaryplate and an inner adjustable plate, the latter being adapted to be clamped in position by the means securing the outer or stationary plate to the door jamb.
A. still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very emcient and useful in operation.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
ln the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view partly in section of a door jamb showing my improved strike plate applied to use thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section therethrough. Fig. 4t is a similar view showing the formation of the strike tab or tongue on the strike plate. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the inner or sliding plate removed; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view cf the complete strike plate in a reverse position from that shown in Fig. l, disclosing hcw the same may be readily applied to use in connection with doors swinging from the opposite direction.
ln describing my invention, l shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which` l indicates a door j amb or casing in which is counter-sunk my improved strike plate. It is a well known fact among carpenters Specification of Letters Patent.

and builders that after constant use, parts of the door jamb are liable to shrinkage which makes it necessary to adjust the strike plate so that the latch and bolt on the door may be effectively engaged therewith.
My invention primarily contemplates the provision of a means for the adjustment of the strike plate without the complete removal thereof from the door jamb and to this end, I provide an outer or stationary plate 2 which is Hat and hollow its full length. rlhis plate 2 is also provided with a longitudinal slot 8, which extends completely therethrough and terminates at points adjacent the ends of the same. i
Formed en the one side edge of the plate 2, adjacent one end of the same, is a tongue or enlarged lug et which forms the strike proper for the device, and main screw open-5 ings 5 are provided in the plate at points adjacent the ends thereof, whereby the same may be removably secured to the door jamb. Disposed within the hollow plate 2, is an inner bolt plate 6 which is provided with the openings 7 and 8, said openings being arranged in vertical alinement and spaced slightly from one another. rlhese openings 7 and 8, however, register with the main slot or opening 3 in the plate 2, so as to provide substantially a pair of openings or sockets therein for the reception of the bolt and latch of the lock (not shown). The upper and lower ends of this plate 6 are provided with recesses or slots 9 which are adapted to receive the screws l() therethrough, the latter being disposed through the screw openings 5 1n the plate 2 to secure the latter in the door jamb. The plate 6 fits somewhat snugly between the walls of the plate 2, but is, nevertheless, capable of a sliding movement therein, and the securing of the screws l0 in position in the door jamb through the plate 2 will clamp the walls of said plate 2 against the plate 6 'to retain the latter in any adjusted position. The slots 9, however, which receive the screws l0 therethrough afford a guiding means for said plate 6 as the latter is adjusted in the plate 2.
ln practice, assuming that the device is set up in assembled position on the door jamb, should it be desired, for any reason whatsoever, to adjust the openings or sockets afforded by the positioning of the inner plate, within the outer plate, the screws l() are slightly loosened, which will release the binding contact of the walls of the plate 2 from the faces of the plate 6. This will per mit said inner plate 6 to be slightly adjusted upwardly or downwardly to the desired position, whereupon said screws may again be turned home and said plate 6 clamped in its adjusted position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided asimple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while l have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is l. A strike plate for locks consisting of a hollow body having opposed yieldable side walls, said walls being provided with alining longitudinal slots, a strike formed on and projecting from one end wall of the body, a plate slidably arranged in said body and provided with a pair of spaced openings for registration with the alining slots in the walls of said body, and means extending through the yieldable walls of said body to secure the latter to a door-jamb and simultaneously clamp said walls against said plate to retain thelatter in its adjusted position in the body.
2. A strike plate for locks consisting of a fiat outer plate of hollow design provided with a central longitudinal slot and having a projection formed on one side edge adjacent one end thereof, said projection havingthe faces thereof flush with the faces of the plate and designed to forni a strike therefor, an inner plate of rectangular design slidably arranged in the outer plate and provided with a pair of spaced openings alining with the slot in the first mentioned plate, said inner plate also having a pair of slots extending from the ends thereof and extending to points adj acent the openings therein, and means extending through the outer plate at points adjacent the ends thereof to secure the same to a door jamb and simultaneously clamp the faces of the same against said inner plate to ret-ain the latter in its adjusted position in the outer plate, said last mentioned means also extending through the slots at the ends of said inner plate to guide the latter in its movement in the outer plate.
ln testimony whereof l hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
