LOUIS VECCHIO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, rate.
Application filed April 8, 1916. Serial No. 89,741.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS Vnoor-no, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops and more particularly to what are known as safety envelops, and the object thereof is to provide an improved envelop of this class the sealing flap of which is connected with the back of the envelop and is folded forwardly over the front of the envelop and sealed or secured by the stamp which is placed on the envelop; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in an envelop of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, ofwhich the ac companying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Figure l is a front view of an envelop made according to my invention and showing the same sealed; Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the sealing flap open and part of the construction broken away; Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a section on the line 4ll of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a section on the line 5.5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 an inside view of a blank from which the envelop shown in Figs. 1 to 5 is made; Fig. 7 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modification; and, Fig. 8 a view similar to Fig. 6 of the blank from the which the envelop shown in Fig. 7 is made. I
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, I provide an envelop a which is made from a blank I; shown in Fig. 6, which blank comprises a front body portion 0 and a back body port-ion (Z, and the blank is provided with a central transverse folding line 6, and the front body portion with parallel folding side lines o and at its free end with a transverse folding line 6 and the front body portion is wider than the back body portion and the side folding lines 6 form side edge flaps f which are gummed on their. inner side and the transverse line 6 forms an end folding flap 9 on the front body portionc, and the back body portion (Z is provided with a single transverse folding line 0 and a sealing flap it having a tongue portion k which is gummed on its inner side.
In the operation of folding the blank I) to formv an envelop, the back body portion d is folded over the front body portion 0, and the side flaps f of the front body portion are folded backwardly over the back body portion and seal e d to the back thereof, while the end folding flap g of the front body portion is folded inwardly, or adapted to be folded inwardly, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
The front body portion 0 of the envelop is also provided in what is called the stamp corner thereof with a transverse slot z, and the shape or form of the sealing flap 7b is such that when said sealing flap is folded over the front of the envelop, the tongue h thereof may be passed through the slot 2', and the envelop is sealed by means of a stamp j which is sealed both to the flap and the body of the envelop as shown in Fig. 1.
The tongue 7&2 of the sealing flap it may also be sealed to the contents of the envelop, if desired, and this constitutes the safety feature of the envelop for the reason that when the tongue of the folding flap is sealed to the contents of the envelop and the stamp j applied it will be practically impossible to remove the stamp and open the envelop without leaving evidence of such act.
The construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to G inclusive, except that the opening into the envelop is at one side edge thereof instead of at one end thereof, and the slot 7' is formed horizontally instead of transversely in the front body portion of the envelop.
The envelop 70 shown in Fig. 7 is formed from a blank m shown in Fig. 8, and comprising afront body portion a, a back body portion 0 and a sealing flap 7? formed on the back body portion and provided with a tongue 79 adapted .to be passed through the slot 7' formed in the stamp corner portion of the front of the envelop. The front body portion a of the blank m is provided with side edge folding flaps 1' similar to the folding flaps f of the blank I), and with an end folding flap 8 similar to the flap 9 of the blank 5, and the tongue [9 of the sealing flap 7? may be gummed on its inner side and the operation of folding the blank m to form the envelop la will be the same as that of folding the blank 6 to form the envelop a and thesealing of the envelop 70, or the method thereof, will be the same as that of sealing the envelop a, and is clearly indicated in Fig. 1, except that the stamp is not shown in position.
The flap g of the blank Z) and the flap 8 of the blank m strengthen the envelops formed from said blanks at the open side or end thereof and these flaps when folded inwardly also aid in retaining or holding the contents of the envelops therein.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and, desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An envelop the front of which is provided in the stamp corner portion thereof with a slot, and the back of said envelop being provided with a sealing flap which is folded forwardly and provided with a tongue which is passed through said slot, the front of the envelop being also provided at the opening thereinto with an inwardly folded flap, and the envelop being sealed by placing the stamp over said slot and securing it to the sealed flap and to the body of the envelop.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 0th day of April, 1916.
LOUIS VECCHIO.
