SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,077, dated March 16, 1897. Application filed September 4, 1896. Serial No. 604,835. (No model.) I

To all whom it may 00ncerw- Be it known that I, JOHN PRICE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dover,

in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare that the'following is a full, clear, and exact'description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to envelops or packages for transmitting articles of merchandise through the mails, especially photographic prints which would be injured by exposure to the light.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved article for the above purpose by which the contents may be inspected by the postmaster without removing them from the envelop or packet.

The invention consists in providing an ordina'ry envelop with an opening at one end and with a flap adapted to fold over said opening and its end be inserted in a slot in the body of the envelop for closing said opening yet allow the flap to be unfolded when desired to allow the contents of the envelop to be inspected, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an envelop constructed in accordance with my invention, the flap being closed or folded. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the flap being opened or unfolded. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank before being folded to form the envelop.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates that portion of the envelop upon which the address is written provided with a bottom flap 2 and

side flaps

3 and 4;, one of which side flaps is provided with a flap 5, the

end of which is adapted to be inserted in a slit 6 in the portion 1. The side flap 3 at its junction with the portion 1 is formed with a slit 7, so that when folded over upon said portion an opening will be formed in the end of the envelop.

The numeral 8 designates the sealing or closing flap.

The manner of making the envelop is as follows: The blankis formed as shown in Fig. 3, and the flap 2 is folded over on the back, as usual, and as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 2. The side flap 3 is then folded over and gummed to flap 2 and flap 4 folded over and gumrned to flap 3, with the end 5 projecting beyond the end of the envelop. The closing-flap is then folded back, as usual.

In using the envelop the photograph or other article is placed therein and the closingflap sealed in the ordinary manner. The flap 5 is then folded over onto the front of the envelop and the end passed through the slit 6. By this means the article is securely held in the envelop, yet can be readily inspected by withdrawing the end of flap 5 from slit 6 and unfolding the flap. The article need not be withdrawn from the envelop, as it can be inspected through the slit 7, and the flap 5 again folded and its end inserted in slit 6.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article, an envelop having an opening in one end, and a slit near said end, and provided with a flap adapted to fold over said opening and have its end passed through said slit, substantially as described.
