V ENVELOPE.

SPECIFICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,540, dated March 16, 1880.

Application filed January 8, 188D.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES D. TERRY, of Terryville, in the county of De Witt and State of TeXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes 5 and I do hereby declare that the followin g is afull, clear,

and exact description of the invention, which -will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, which form a part of this specication.

This invention has for its `object the construction of an envelope, either single or double, provided with a projecting iiap, to which the postage stamp or stamps may be attached in such a manner that the said stamp or stamps may be canceled by perforation (or by means of a punch or otherwise) without danger of inj urin g the contents of the envelope.

My invention therefore consists in certain improvements in the construction of the envelope, which will be hereinafter fully described with reference to the drawings, in which- Figure lis a plan view of the blank from which my improved envelopeis manufactured. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the envelope finished. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the double envelope.

Corresponding parts in the several gures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This improved envelope is manufactured from the blank A, represented in Fig. l. Said blank consists of a body, B, provided upon the sides with ilaps C O, and at one end with a flap, D, which, by folding upon the body B, forms the envelope. The said body B is provided with a transverse slot, E, through which the end F of iiap D is passed, so as to form the sealing-Hap, which latter is bent over upon the back of body B so as to cover the slot E, which forms the opening of the envelope.

Flaps C O are folded over upon iiap D and pasted upon the latter, thus closing the sides of the envelope.

The flap F may be gummed in the usual manner, if so desired.

The part G of the bodyB which projects beyond slot E forms the flap, upon which postage-stamps may be attached, as shown. It will be seenl that said iiap may be perforated for thepurpose of canceling the stamps without injuring the'contents of the envelope.

Fig. 4 of the drawings illustrates a clouble or return envelope constructed on the saine principle, the object of which is to secure an-` swer to any message which may be sent.

Havingthus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The blank A herein described, consisting of the body B, having flaps C C, D, and E and slot E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
