Description

NI'IED STATES FFIoE;
IMPROVEMENT IN .ENVELOPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,380, dated October 17, 1876; application filed August 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DQDOUGH- ERTY, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Envelope; and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view of the blank. Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views, respectively, of the back'and face of the envelope.
The invention is an improvement in the class of envelopes one end of which projects beyond the body or part for containing the letter proper, to form a margin to which the stamp may be afiixed, and whereon it may be canceled without risk of injury to the letter or other contents of the envelope. The invention relates particularly to the construction of the envelope-blank for forming such margin, as hereinafter described.
A A represent the long rectangular body of envelope, having the short folding side flaps B 0, end flap D, and fold a at ends of these side flaps. The part A extends from fold a, back over and beyond the part A, havin g a return-flap, E, that turns at the fold a, and is pasted to the flaps O D, thus forming a cavity for the letter, and a separate side extension, F, for the postage-stamp.
The stamp may be then' canceled by cutting, pricking, tearing, or in any other manner, without affecting the contents of the co velope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, with the long rectangular strip AA, of the turn-flaps B O D and return-flap E, to form the envelope, with extension F, in the manner specified.
EDWARD D. DOUGHERTY.
