Description

lsion.
LEGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1916.
Application led April 17, 1915. Serial No. 22,040.
To oZZ whom it may confiera:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Roenes, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Covington, in the county of Alleghany and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to leggings for military and other purposes, and has reference more particularly to a legging which comprises a body having an underlying and an overlying part, the parts having co-acting, locking members, both concealed the overlying part.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple andiefiective legging which can be used by soldiers, equestrians, hunters and others, which is capable of all the usesto which leggings are ordinarily put, which is extremely strong and durable, which is light in weight, which can be inexpensively manufactured, Vand which. can be easily manipulated, besides being comfortable when worn, and attractive in appearance.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyparts in different positions; Fig. 4 is an enlarged, transverse section on the line` 4-4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown a legging or puttee`of the conventional form, having a` bodyV 10, formed at the lower end, 11, to fit comfortl ably about the ankle, and at therear, 12,
shaped tol conform to the outline of the lower leg. At the side, the legging is open and has an underlying part. ,13 and an overlying part 14. At suitable points along the vlengthof the open side I employ fastening devices 15, preferably three in number. The underlying part 13, of the legging, is progagement with.. the spring keeper .19.
cured in place by means of rivets 18, or in any other suitable manner These strips may be fashioned from metal or any other material adapted for the purpose. Secured to the overlying part of the legging, adjacent to the slots 16, are spring keepers 19, consisting of elongated members each having at one end a laterally disposed or enlarged head 20. At the opposite end, the' keeper is secured to the legging by means of rivets' The head 20, at the inner,l face is provided with teeth or serrations 22A' v. adapted to engage the corresponding serrated members 17. It will be seen that the' 21 or the like.
length of the spring 'keepers 19 is' received in one ofthe slots 16'so that the head can engage at the strips 17 as 'clearly shown in Fig. 4. The normal resiliency of the keeper tends to maintain .the parts in engagement so that the legging is closed.
Each securing member has associated therewith a releasing device. This oomprises an eyelet or fer-rule 23 .located in an opening 2e of the overlapping part of the legging, over'. one of the slots 16 of the underlying part. The eyelet has lan inwardly extending ring 25 formed integrally therewith, which at its inner edge has an inwardly disposed flange 26.l A button 27 is niovably mounted within the eyelet and has a laterally extended ange 28 and a stud 29 which extend through the ring into .en-
helical spring 30 is located within the ring and engages the il'ange`28 of the button and the flange 26 of the ring, thus tending normally to press the button outwardly, that is, away from the spring keeper. When it is desired to release the keeper it ismerely necessary to lpress the button inwardly, against ,the tension of the spring 30, to force the keeper fout' of engagement "with the ser' rated strips 17, so that the. legging can bei opened.
the elongated strips 17,.which may be en-.
gaged` by the keepers at diierent points of.
to different dimensions v'andcan. be made to lit snugly and comfortably. It will-be undei-stood furthermore, that the co-acting y It will be readily seen .that by providing locking members, z. ve., the strips 17, and the keepers, are concealed by the overlapping part of the legging, and that from the ontside nothing is visible but `the releasing button 17 with its eyelet. This arrangement serves to enhance the appearance of the ary ticle materially.
Having th'usdescribed my invention, I
claim as IIe/W,v and desire to secure by Let- I ters Patent:
A legging comprising a body having an underlying and an overlying part, said underlying part having an edge recess, a serrated member secure to said underlying part adjacent to said recess, a resilient member .seeuredto said overlying part and ada-pied` name to this specification in the presence 25 of two subscribing Witnesses.
