CDMBINATION-GBMENT.
Speeeation of Letters etent.
Patented May 1li, 1915.
Application nled December 14, 1914. Serial No. 277,066.
To all whom it may concer A Be it known that L JOSEPH MICHAELIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough ot' Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combina tion-Garments, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to combination garment-s or union suits, more particularly to dress or neglige shirts with drawers attached and combination undergarments, and the objects of the invention are to provide a combination garment with abackopening that is easily opened or closed and which can be adjusted.
To the accomplishment of the above objects, and to such others as may hereinafter appear7 the invention comprises a combination garn'ient having shirt and drawers attached, the back el the drawers comprising the seat being cut in a transverse direction in the vicinity of the waist line to provide a back opening which is closed by means o two overlapping flaps which extend from the vicinity of the waist line to the crotch of the garment.
The invention also comprises means for closing said flaps andretaining the same in position, the closing means being adjustable to permit of the seat of the garment being made 'luller if desired.
l will now proceed to describe my invention with reference` to the accompanying drawings, and will then point out the novel features in claims.
Figure 1 is a front view of a garment inadc in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a back view of the garment shown in Fig. l.. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the seat of the garment in open position.
ln the drawings, numeral l designates the body ot an. imdergarment or union suit, to `which is secured the drawers 2; in the present instance shown as of linee length, although the same may be made longer if so desired. While the body or the garment is shown as anumlergarment,I the invention is equally applicable to a dress or neglige shirt with drawers attached..
ln arcmdunce with this invention, the' back of the drawers is open between the points and 4, to provide a transverse opening in the vicinity of the waist line which extends to the crotch 5, the opening so formed being closed b means of two overlapping llaps 6 and Suitable straps 8 and 9 secured to the upper ends or corners of the flaps G and 7 are provided for operat- 'ing the flaps to open and close the back of the drawers. The strap 8 is arranged to pass through a small slot 10 in the back of the drawers adjacent the point 3 to permit of the flap 7 being drawn into its proper closing position underneath the flap 6. Suitable guides 11, 12, 13 and 14 are provided for holding the straps in operative position. The loose ends of the straps 8 are preferably secured to the front of the garment by means of buttons 15, the ends of the straps being made a little larger than the body of strap Pto prevent the saine easily passing through the guides 13 and 14 when the ends of the straps are unbuttoned to open the back of the garment. Additional buttons 16 on the front of the garment are provided to which the ends of the straps 8 and 9 can be buttoned to allow of a certain additional fullness in the waist of the garment if so desired.
To insure a nice lit to the back of the drawers, 4the lower end of the flap 6 extends slightlyv down the inner side of the right leg A as shown at 17 whereas the lower end of the flap 7 extends slightly down the inner side of the left leg as shown at 18. This arrangement of the lower ends ofthe flaps insures the closing of the crotch of the garment without bringing undue strain upon the straps 8 and 9 to accomplish this purpose. p It is to be noted that lower exten.-
sions` 17 and 18 of the flaps do not in any way restrict the opening when the straps 84 and 9 are loosened as clearly shown in Fig. 3. To insure the closing of the back of the garment between the points 3 and 4 a small flap 19 is provided, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3,' secured to the back of the body of the garment.
From the above description it will be seen that the back of the garment when closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, has a perfectly smooth back, a closed crotch, and no buttons or other fastening means except on the front of the garment, where they are out of the way and easily 'fastened or unfastened.
From the above description it will be seen back of said drawers;-"an.d'straps that the back of the garment, when open as shown in Fig. 3, affords an ample opening on either side of the center of the garment, the straps in no Way interfering with the opening.
The back opening is easily closed by pulling the straps, no other adjustment except l fastening the ends of the straps being necesy sary to close the back' of the drawers, as shown in Fig. 2,
The front of the garment is open from the neck to the crotch, but any other front opening canl be used if desired.
While the invention has been described with particular reference tothe details of construction', the4 same lis not to be considered as limited thereto, as many changes can be made and still fall within the scope of the invention set forth in the following claims.
1. A combination garment comprising a -`one-piece suit, consisting of shirt and draw- 'ers combined, the back of said drawers, com'- prising the seat, being open transversely across the back of the garment in the vicinity of the waist line and extendin downwardly to the crotch to form a Vgshaped opening, and overlapping iiaps for closing the back of said drawers.
2. A combination garment comprising a one-piece suit, consisting of shirt and drawers combined, the back of said drawers comprising the seat being 4open transversely across the back of the garment inthe vicinity of the waist line and extendin downl' wardly to the crotch t5 form/a Vg opening, overlapping lapsor dwing the secured to said flaps for drawing the same into closed position. y
3. A combination garment comprising a one-piecefsnit, consisting of shirt and drawers combined, the back of said drawers, com prising the seat, being open transversely across the back of t e garment in the vicinity of the waist line and extending downwardly to the crotch to formv a V shaped opening, and overlapping flaps for closing the back of said drawers, the top of each fia-p opening, three overlapping shaped being substantially the width of said transverse openimg.A y
fi. A combination garment comprising a one-piece suit, consisting of shirt and drawers combined, the back of said drawers, comprising the seat, being open transversely across the back of the garment in the vicinity of the waist line and extendimY down- Wardly to the crotch to form a fshaped opening, and overlapping flaps for closing the back of said drawers, the top of each flap being substantially the Width of said transverse opening, the bottom of each ap arranged to overlap each other at the crotch and to be secured to the inner sides or' the drawer legs.
5. A combination garment comprising a one-piece suit, consisting of shirt and drawers combined, the back of said drawers Comprisingthe seat being open transversely across the back of the garment in the vicinity of the Waist" line and extending down- Wardly to the crotch to :term a V' shaped flaps for closing the back oi said drawers, and straps secured to two of said fiaps for drawing the same into closed position.
6. A combination garment comprising a one-piece suit, consisting of shirt and drawers combined, the back oi said drawers comprising' the seat being open transversely across the back of the garment in the vicinity :of thewaist line and extending down- ',Wardly to the crotch to forni a V shaped opening, three overlapping tiaps for closing the baci: of said drawers, and straps secured to two of said flaps for drawing the saine into closed position, guides on said garment for retaining said straps in position, and enlarged ends on said straps to prevent said straps slipping through saA f. guides,
in testimony' whereof l have signed this speciiication in the presence of tiro subscribing witnesses.
