Description

A. N. OPPENHEIM ATHLETIC UNION GARMENT Filed Dec. 1, 1922 Patented Jul 15, 1924.
UNITED srA asrATENT OFFICE.
- AUSTIN N. OPPENHEIH, 0F BALTIMORE,
armnrrc-nmon GARMENT.
' Application filed December 1,1922. Serial meoam.
To all whom i t may concern:
Be it known that Aos'rm N. OBPENH IM, 1 a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, has in- 'vented certain new and useful Improvements in Athletic Union Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in athletic union garments and has for its ob-.
ject to provide an improved construction of union garment of the woven fabric type wherein the crotch is closed; both the front and back are free of vertical plackets from the neck down to the waist; the front and rear are permanently connected across one shoulder between one arm-hole and the neck- 0 ening while across the other shoulder tl ere is provided a strap which extends from the rear body-part. and laps over'onto the front bod -part and is detachably con nected to sai latter body-part. V
According to my invention, the athletic garment will be free of the front placket from the neck to the crotch and will'therefore also be free of buttons down-the front which buttons fre uently become detached leaving the front p acket gaping. A
By therefore providing an athletic undergarment of theusual woven fabric with but one detachable fastening that must be madiiflllfltfid to put'- the garment on or take it I produce a garment that is'much sim' hfied, very comfortable and which will avoid the annoyance to a'wearer who when he puts an open front garment on finds one or more buttons missing from the front placket. I a
The invention is illustrated in the accom-- panying drawing, wherein F1 1 shows the improved garment in perspective asviewed from the front, and
Fig. 2 illustrates, on an enlarged scale,
' the upper-portion of the garment to bring out more clearly the connections between the front and rear body-parts which connections separate the neck-opening from the arm-hole openings.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of %y reference-to the drawing it will be noted that the garment which is made principally of woven fabric has a front 3 com prising an up r body-part 4, and a lowereg-part 5, an that said bod -part is perman'ently closed at the front om the neckvided as is usual in sp lling 6, down; in that nO fr p t is employed. 7
At the crotch 7, the garment is permanently closed by any suitable crotch strucf ture, such forexampleas by crotch insert strips 8, which are permanently stitched in the legs and extend across the crotchin the v usual manner.
A slit9, see broken lines in Fig. ,1, is provlded in the front of the garment above the covered by a short flap 10, that is permanently stitched to the garment front, but has one vertical'edge 11; thereof free so the same may be turnedback.
1n the present instance the rear .of the garment has an upper back-part 12, and a cross-wise insert 13, of theusual. elastic web- 'bing is provided" in the back at about the A posterior flap 14, is also provided'at the rear of the garment as indicated" waist-line.
by broken lines in Fig. 1. v
The neck-opening 6, as'is usual in athletic underwear, extends-well down or is cut low atthe front of the garment to provide amlple opening about the neck. 'rm-holes 15, 0f ample size are also pro this class of athletic garments. 3
At the right shoulder thereis provided an elastic strap connection 16 which has its rear end permanently connected to the u per edge of the rear body-part 12 while its out en is permanently connected to the front bodyart 4. This elastic. connection 16 there ore provides a fixed and elastic connection between the, rent and rmanent crotch, for obvious purposes, and this slit is back, both of-which are woven material and therefore are inelastic, and this strap 16 also permanently separates the neck-opening 6" from the right arm-hole 15.-
At the opposite or left shoulder ,of the garment there is rovided an elastic connection or strap 1 whose rear edge 18 is 17 formin I ished edge and Toy thus folding es webbing along the two sides it produces e double thickness that reinforces the strap. The front detachable edge 19 ofthe connection strap 17 is provided on its under side with a strip 21 to the elastic-strap 17, shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, which strip is of inelastic material, and the attachment of this strip 21, renders the front edge of tening to retain the garment on the body is the connection strap '17 on the left shoulder and this connection fastens at its forwardedge to the upper edge of the front body part.
It will further he noted that when the elastic connection 1? is detached st 20, the neck-opening 6 end the large left arm-opening 15 wilitogether form on opening of setficient size to enable the garment to be drawn up over the legs and body of the wearer and that when drawn up, the one connection l7 on the left shoulder may readily be fastened with the fingers of the righthend of the wearer and the garment thus be held in place on the body.
The manner of construction the detechable strip 17, made as it is, throngh'e conirtenings and danger of tearing at those fastening is minimized.
Having described my invention, I claim,-
A one-piece undergarment of inelastic material, comprising a. unitary body and leg portion having relatively large am openrings, and a neck opening between them, a separable shoulder strap sepemtin' the neck from one arm opening an adapted ophenindg w on isenga ed to provide a slip-on as the combined nec opening and one arm opening are of a size to-freely admit the body to the garment, said separable shoulder strap of elastic woven material and havi a pair of buttonholes in said elastic meteria a pair of buttons on the front portion of the garmerit to enter'the bnttonholes, and e. strip of inelastic material secured beneath the end of the strap and having registering buttonholes and preventing stretchmg of the strep at the louttonhole end.
AUSTIN N. QOPPEIM.
i In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 7
