(01.. 2-80) This invention'relates to body garments" and, more particularly, to a garment construction suitable for use in playsuits, bathing suits, trunks with and without a bib, pajamas, slacks, and the like. Still more particularly, this invention re- Still another object of my invention is to provicle, in body garments, a construction which will insure a close fit in the crotch area.

The foregoing object and others ancillary thereto I prefer to accomplish as follows:

.According toa preferred embodiment of my invention I provide, in connection with a smooth main panel of. a body garment, a pair of overlapping opposite panels attached to a relatively narrow crotch-tab adjacent a common plane, each to an opposite side of such plane from the other. Specifically, the garment is provided with two overlapping rear panels that are integral with the side edges of a front panel and are otherwise unattached to each other except through their mutual attachment to a crotch strap extending rearward from the front panel. The attachment of the rear panels to the crotch strap may be either internal or external, and when each is attached to its own side of the median line, the rear panels can bereVersed. to determine which is going to overlap outwardly of the other. With this arrangement the garment is suitable for children, teen-age, girls, or adults. In garments such as, trunks'playsuits, pajamasand the like, it serves as a simple; arrangement for smoothly and rever-siblyclosing such garments about the body. If the rearpanels are joined to the crotch-tab overlapped on the median, reversibility is obviated.

The novel features that I consider characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which: I .Fig.'1 11s a front view ofv a arment included inmyinvention;

The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and: 3, in which the invention is incorporated in aplaysuit comprising the front panel l0, above which rises bib !2 that merges into shoulder straps l4,- 15, having respectively tie strings l6 and H, which may be either'knotted behind the neck, as suggested in Fig. 2, or brought downward across the back of the wearer and thence secured adjacent the waist.

The front paneliil-has lower converging tapered edges l8 and i9, between the lower edges of which is the crotch-tab 28. As shown in Fig. 3, the tab 20 preferably flares from its narrowest mid-portion to. a relatively wider rear end 2|. Theside edges 24.ancl 25 of the front panel are each joined to. a rear panel designated 26 and 2'! respectively. The rear panels may be integral with. the front panel or there may be a seam along the

24 and 25, depending upon the manner, in which the garment-maker may wish to produce this construction to derive the best economy of materialand labor.

In. Figs. 2 and 3 appears the line MM which isan upright. median through the garment. Each of the rear panels 26 and?! has an overlapping flap portion 28 and 29 respectively that is roughly triangular and which extends across and overlies the median M'-M. The flaps 28 and 29 are relatively horizontalalong the "waist line and curve from the waist generally acrossthe median where they are. attached to the crotch-tab Zii, each to the, respective side of the median on which the panel joinsthe front panel.

In a preferred form of the construction as shown in Fig. 8, the lower pointed portions of the rear panels can be seen to'be attached, rearward of the lateral median L-L, to the tab 20.

In one form of my construction as can be seen in Fig. 2, the

26 and 21 at the corners of the flaps 28 and 29 are provided with ties 30 and 3! which may be brought forwardly across the hips and around the waist and tied or otherwise joined to secure the garment into close fitting overlapping relation across the buttocks. Keepers are indicated at 32 and 33 to insure that the ties 30 and 3| are held upward to the waist at the rear of the garment.

In Figs. 2 and 3 the rear panels 26 and 2! are attached to the outer face of the tab 29, and the tab extension 2| lies inward and under the less overlapping portions of the rear. In this case the lower pointed portions of the rear panels are each attached wholly to its respective side of the median M'-M, and have been carried slightly farther forward than was the case in connection with the garment in Fig. 3. This is possible because these point ends lie inside of the crotchtab 44 and thus a slightly thicker crotch is obtainable. As described before, the crotch tab 44 overlies the slightly overlapped lower pointed ends of the rear panels and serves-as a shield, however, from the outside rather than, as before, on the inside of the garment.

26 and 21, and 42 and 43, insures in a garment that there is adequate material across the rear to form cups that will accommodate either a slim-hipped or a full-hipped body, since there is a wide latitude of adjustment. In the case of a slim-hipped person the rear panels overlap to a greater degree than otherwise.

It will be noted that, between the lower edges of the front panel In and the rear panels, suitable oblique leg openings are provided, By proper cutting these openings are shaped and positioned to fit the body closely near the crotch, yet as scantily as possible. The various panel edges shown throughout the drawings have been indicated as being bound with tape, but it will be obvious that the edges may be merely hemmed or otherwise treated according to the many practices in the art.

While I have shown and described particular embodiments of my invention, it will occur to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the invention, and I, therefore, aim in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A play suit, comprising: a front panel to cover the body from hip to hip and from the crotch upward, said front panel merging with breast-covering portions, a tab to extend substantially through the crotch, a rear panel attached to each hip side-portion of the front panel and to the crotch tab adjacent a medial line thereof, said rear panels being of a, size to overlap upward from adjacent their point of "attachment to the crotch tab, and means for securing the rear panels in overlapped adjusted relation across the rear of a wearer.

2. A play suit comprising: a front panel to cover the body from hip to hip and from the crotch upward, said front panel merging with breast-covering portions, a tab to extend substantially through the crotch, a. rear panel attached to each hip side-portion of the front panel and to the inner face of the crotch tab adjacent a medial line thereof, said rear panels being of a size to overlap upward from adjacent their point of attachment to the crotch tab, and means for securing the rear-panels in overlapped adjusted relation across the rear of a wearer.

3. A play suit, comprising: a front panel to cover the body from hip to hip and from the crotch upward, said front panel merging with breast-covering portions, a tab to extend substantially through the crotch, a rear panel attached to each hip side-portion of the front panel and to the outer face of the crotch tab adjacent a medial line thereof, said rear panels being of a size to overlap upward from adjacent their point of attachment to the crotch'tab, and means for securing the rear panels in overlapped adjusted relation across the rear of a wearer.

- 4. A garment for the hips and lower torso, comprising: a front panel including a tab to extend substantially through the crotch, a rear panel attached to each side of the front panel and to said crotch tab adjacent a medial line, said rear panels being of a size to'overlap upward from adjacent their point of. attachment to the crotch tab, and means for securing the overlapped rear panels in adjusted relation across the rear of a wearer.

5. A garment for the hips and lower torso, comprising: a front panel including a tab to extend substantially through the crotch, a rear panel attached to each side of the front panel and to the inner face of said crotch tab adjacent a medial line, said rear panels being of a size to overlap upward from adjacent their point of attachment to the crotch tab, and means for securing the overlapped rear panels in adjusted relation across the rear of a wearer.

6. A garment for the hips and lower. torso, comprising: a front panel including a tab to extend substantially through the crotch, a rear panel attached to each side of the front panel and to the outerface of said crotch tab adjacent a medial line, said rear panels being of a size to overlap upward from adjacent their point of attachment to the crotch tab, and means for securing the overlapped rear panels in adjusted relation across the rear of a wearer.
