2 Claims. I 1
This invention relates to a garment comprising a wrap-around skirt structure.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved two-part wrap-around skirt.
Another object of the invention is to provide a skirt structure adapted to support a pantie or the like while giving a maximum of freedom of movement to the wearer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment adapted to provide support for a removable sanitary crotchband or the like while giving the user a maximum of freedom of movement,
Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and in the several steps and relation and order of each of said steps to one or more of the others thereof, all as will be pointed out in the following description, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
The invention will best be understood if the following description is read in connection with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a view of the garment shown in Figure 1 showing the pantie slightly separated from, and in exploded elation to, the remainder of the garment;
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic top plan view of the skirt portion of the garment;
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the skirt in perspective with portions cut away; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the combination of skirt and pantie in the form in which they are when in use; and
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic view of a strip of material showing how the two skirt portions l4 and i5 may be economically cut out; and
Figure 7 is a diagrammatic View of the parts comprising a skirt portion and its lateral projection after they are cut out but before they are joined.
The numeral l2 indicates generally a garment comprising a skirt having the horizontally and oppositely extending portions l4 and It. (See Figure 6.) As clearly indicated in Figure 3, the skirt portions are of sufficient extent in a horizontal plane so that their ends are overlapped both in front and rear. The skirt portions are not joined together, however, except at, or sub- 2 I stantially at, the waistline it where they may also, if desired, be, joined to. a bodice l9.
Each skirt portion has a lateral extension projecting from one end at the top and shaped to be form fitting. This lateral extension may be integral with the skirt portion or separately cut out and joined to the skirt portion. As a labor and material saving device and to make it form fitting the skirt portion is preferably cut out separately (see Figure 7) and stitched to the skirt portion along the line s. Thus for example the extensions i and 16 may be cut out to have their inner edges i4 and l6 shaped as edge lii' is shaped relative to skirt portion H5 in Figure l. When they are stitched to the skirt portions along the lines i i and 15 respectively, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 6, each portion cooperates with the skirt portion to which it is secured and the other skirt portion to provide a form fitting garment. In this manner the garment may be readily manufactured on a large scale as a ready made article.
Portion M has the extension I i disposed on the inside of the overlapping end of portion it, andportion It has the extension Is disposed on the inside of the overlapping end of portion [4. The extensions M and [6 respectively extend down a substantial distance from the waistline, and as illustrated herein they extend from a fourth to a third of the distance from the waistline to the bottom of the skirt. While the upper margin of each extension M and Mi respectively, is stitched along the waistline l8 to the overlapping skirt portions M and 16 respectively, the outer lateral margins W and "5 respectively, and the bottom margins [4 and [6 of the extensions respectively, are free and not directly interconnected with the opposite skirt portions.
. As shown herein the front edge 20 or" skirt portion It overlaps the lateral extension w of skirt ortion l6 and the edge 23 of said skirt portion l6, and similarly the rear end 22 of skirt portion [6 overlaps the lateral extension 14* of skirt portion it and extends over the edge 2| of skirt portion [4.
Desirably the skirt ends 20 and 22 extend in opposite directions equal distances beyond the middle of the front and rear of the garment respectively, and extensions I l and Ili similarly extend equal distances beyond the mid point of the front and rear of the garment respectively to give balance to the garment.
Along the lower margins of the extensions M and lfi of the lateral extensions HI and I6- respectively fastening means such for example as the buttons 2), are provided to support one or more garments, such for example as a sanitary apron or crotchband 24, a pantie 26, or both. The garment or garments to be attached to the fastening means b may be provided with cooperating attachment means such for example as the buttonholes I). If members 24 and 26 are used together they may be attached to the same or to alternate fastening means b and when used together the crotch of the pantie will provide further support for member 24.
The result of attaching one or both of said members 24 and 26 between said lateral extensions I4 and I6 is to improve the hang of the skirt since they, and particularly the pantie 26, by interconnecting the said extensions serve to hold said extensions in roper position on the body and prevent rolling up of the free edges thereof. The effect of the pantie in positioning the skirt members on the user's body is diagrammatically represented in Figure 4 by the dotted lines 30 extending to the free margin 14 of skirt portion H from the outside of the opposite leg of the pantie at 32. Similarly the lines 34 extending to the free margin ls of lateral extension Hi from the outside of the opposite leg of the pantie at 36 indicate the support iven to the free edge [6 of lateral extension IS.
The structure disclosed herein provides for the swinging support of either or both members 24 or 26 without causing the skirt or said members to bind or to be distorted or bulgy. Because the weight of the attached garments is distributed to the users hipline through the lateral extensions l4 and I8 the skirt portions remain free, and on the other hand the attached garment or garments xert a balancing effect on the said lateral extensions H and l8 and prevent them from rolling up.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this invention an article in which the various objects hereinabove set forth together with many thoroughly practical advantages are successfully achieved. As various possible embodiments might be made of the mechanical features of the abov invention and as the art herein described might be varied in various parts, all without departing from the scope of the invention, it is to be understood that all matter here inbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
1. A skirt comprising two parts oppositely disposed and overlapping and interengaged in front and back at the waist line, each part having along one lateral margin a laterally extending portion stitched thereto and disposed inside of the overlapped margin of the other skirt part and extending only part way down the skirt, each of said lateral extensions having attachment means adjacent its lower margin, and a garment having attachment means engageable with the attachin'ent means on said extensions respectively supported within the skirt assembly between the said oppositely disposed lateral extensions of the skirt parts 2. A garment comprising a divided skirt consisting of two skirt parts extending part way around the users body in opposite directions with their opposite lateral margins slightly overlapped and with each part having one lateral margin disposed inside and the other lateral margin disposed outside of the opposed lateral margins of the other skirt part, each of said parts respectively having at the top along the lateral margin which is inside the overlapped portion of the other skirt part a lateral projection extending down from the waistline to a line between the thighs of the wearer and only part way around the other skirt part, attachment means on each of said projections, and a garment supported within the skirt assembly on said attachment means.
