WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY F. SCHWARTZENBEBG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
, DRAFT-YOK]; FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Application filed March a, 1914. Serial 110.823,!01.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it'known that I, HARRY F. SCHWARTZ- ENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft- Yokes for Railway-Cars, which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft yokes for railway car draft rigging.
The-object of my invention is to provide a draft yoke adapted to be readily engaged to or disengaged from a draw bar.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of draft yoke embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a longitudinally vertical section on line 44 of Fig. 1..
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a U-shaped draft strap having an upper limb 6 andlower limb 7, a connecting .member 8 for said limbs, a filler block 9 secured thereto preferably by a rivet 10.
The numeral 11 designates a draw bar of the standard type only the rear portion thereof being shown in the drawings. The butt 12 of the draw bar is provided with oppositely arranged shoulders 13-43, the said shoulders being engaged by shoulders 14-14 of the limbs of the yoke, the said shoulders 1l-14 being formed by the inward turning of the limbs of the yoke strap near its forward free ends. The limbs of the yoke strap are forwardly extended from the inturned portion, as illustrated clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings, forming the jaw members 15- 15, which are in preferable construction adapted to engage at their ends against the adjacent face of the draw bar. In preferable construction, the .jaw members 15 forwardly con erge and are adapted to receive a hllll'fllllllllllg member 16 which is secured to the draw bar .by the couplerkey 17 passing trans\ ersely thel'ethrough.
The surroundin" members 16 )referabl comprises a pair of oppositely arranged U- shaped bands 1818 having overlapping ends provided with registering perforations 19 m ;:lined with the transverse-slot 20 in the draw bar for the passage of the coupler key 17. In preferable construction each of the U-shaped members 18 has an extending flange 21 upon each leg thereof to provide sufficient surface for the suitable arrangement of the perforation 19 therethrough. The rear edges 22-422 of the surrounding member 16 engage in preferable arrangement against t e forward faces 23-23- of the in-turned portions of the limbs of the okes. In assembling the yoke and draw ar the yoke strap 5 is placed in position upon the draw bar, the shoulders 14 thereof engaging a ainstthe draw bar shoulders 13, the U- aped members are placed in their opposed relation u on the forward inturned aw members 0 the yoke, and the key 17 is passed through the registering perforation. in the U-shaped members and.
draw-bar. To disengage the draw bar from the yoke, the operation is reversed. Upon forward pull of the draw bar,- the shoulders of the yoke are held in engagement against the shoulders of the draw bar by the u shaped members 18, the coupler key 17 preventing separating movement of the two U-shaped members. On rearward movement of the draw bar the butt thereof is adapted to engage directly against a front filler or the front end of the pressure resisting member within the yoke.
I claim: r
1. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with a draw bar having the usual shoulders on top and bottom thereof,
a of a yoke having the limbs thereof provided draw bar shank, and meansfor holding the yoke in position on the draw bar, said means wcluding two U-shaped members having overappsd slotted sides, each of said members having an inclined wall fitting over the said ends of the yoke strap in front of the shoulders thereon, and a key passing through said U-shaped inepibers and the draw bar.
2. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with a draw har having shoulders on the top and bottom thereof, a
yoke provided with shoulders at the front 11.
an s of the arms there Qperating with the draw yoke. being pron-fled also of, said shoulders 00- bar shoulders, sald with aw members in fmnt of said shoulders formed thereon, apair of Ushaped members incles ing said jaw members, said U-shaped members having over-lapped sides and being also countr parts, and a key passing through slots .i n said over lapped sides and the draw bar. mum F. SCHWAR'I'lENBERG.
