' A TTOZZE Y UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HARRY F. SCHWARTZENBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CAR DRAFT-RIGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 9, 1914. Serial No. 823,284. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. SonwAR'r-' znxnnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a cera draft yoke adapted to be readily detached from the draw-bar.
in the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 a plan view of a draft yoke embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is aside elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 4 indicates a U-shaped draft yoke comprising upper and lower limbs 5 and ('3, respectively, and the preferahl y integral rear connecting member 7. "In preferable construction, a filler block 8 ccurcd to the inner face of the member 7 hr suitable means, preferably the rivet 9. The free end of each limb of the yoke is provided with a transverse vertically arranged T head 10 forming outer shoulders 11-l l and inner shouhlersl2-12.
The draw-bar i i, the rear end of which is shown in Fig ,7 of the drawings, is of the usual type hiuingg the oppositely arranged shoulders l l-----l-ladapted to engage against the shoulders 12l2 of the free ends of the yoke. The yoke is secured to the drawbar by nut-ans of a air of loops 1515 and a coupler key 16. 'lhe loops are identical inconstrmttion, each having a transverse portion 17 adapted to engage'a limb of the yoke. the fin-ward edge 18 of each being adapted to engage against a shoulder 11 upon the yoke, and'each of said loop's having side plates 'l)l$) adapted to straddie the dram-bar. ln assembled position, one of said loops engages the upper limb, 5 of the yoke, and another loop engages the lower limb 6 of the yoke. When so en through the draw-bar.
7' gaged, the lateral perforations 2020 in either plate 19 register with the perforation 21 in the draw-bar and receive the coupler key 16. One of the plates 19'of each loop has an outward bend 22. therein to permit the passage of said plate along the outer face of the straight plate of the opposed loop, thus forming a substantially rectangular opening 23 Within the loops When in as sembled position in Which the draW-bar-is received. In engaging the draw-bar to the yoke, the draw-bar is placed in position therein its shoulders engaging against the inner shoulders formed by the T-heads at the free ends of the yoke, one of the loops placed in position in engagement with one limb of the yoke, and another loop placed in position in engagement with the other limb of the yoke, and the coupler key passed through the perforations in the loops and To disengage the draw bar from the yoke,. the operation is reversed.
I claim:
1. In a 'draftrigging for railway cars, in combination, a draw-bar, a U-shaped yoke strap engaging the draw-bar at its free ends,
Patented Feb. 22', 1916.
a pair of independent counterpart loops passing around the yoke strap, and means to,
secure said loops to the draw-bar, each of said: loops having a straight wing and an out-turned wing, the out-turned wing of one loop being disposed adjacent the straight wing of the other loop.
2. Ina draft rigging for rail my cars, the combination with a draw bar having shoulders on top and bottom thereof, of a yoke having shouldered enlargements at the ends of the arms thereof adapted to engage the draw her shoulders, a pair of counterpart loops having over-lapped sides and passing around the yoke, and draw-bar butt, said loops also engaging said enlargements on the ends of the yoke strap, and means to secure said loops to .the draw bar, said enlargements on the ends of the yoke arms being engaged by the draw bar shoulders and the loops upon forward movement of the draw bar to thereby cause the yoke to move with the draw bar.
2 v gimme 3. A device of the character desoribed T shaped heads, the overlapped sides of comprising a U shaped yoke having the ends said loops being provided with, alined slots of the arms thereof provided with T shaped adapted to receive a coupler key.
