subject'of the Emperorbf Austria-l-Iungary, Cookresiding in Chicago, in the county of and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Yokes for Dratt-Riggings, of which the-following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvements n yokes for drat't rigging s.
It has hitherto been the general custom to make draft yoke-s of wrought iron which are either riveted to the draw-bar or to a connecting hood or box which in turn is keyed to the draw-bar. wrought-iron afi'ords great resistance under tension and for this reason is desirable for draft yokes, but where the yoke is riveted to the draw-bar or to a connecting hood, the portions of the metal in front of the rivets and directly adjacent thereto are placed under compression when the gear is operated, with the result that the wrought iron is upset and distorted and the connection thereby impaired. Cast steel yokes have been-provided to overcome some of the defects of the wrought iron yokes and to provide a detachable key connection with the coupler, but such yokes are relatively expensive and are not adapted to withstand sharp blows nor are they as reliable under tension or pull as wrought iron yokes. It also sometimes happens that cast steel yokes are defective, due to blow holes therein, which defects are not apparent inspection thereof and only come to light when the yoke is in use, thereby incurring considerable danger in the operation of trains.
One object of my invention is to prov' ide a yoke composed partly of wrought iron and partly of steel castings which will embody all the advantages of the wrought iron and cast steel yokes without the defects of each.

In said drawing, the yoke is shown as comprising two straps of wrought iron 10, 10 each of which has its end portions 11, 1 slightly offset in both vertical and horizontal directions from the main portions thereof, the oltset portions 11, 11 being'extended through parallel slots 12, 12 in two end pieces 13, 13 of cast steel, the ends'of the offset portions 11, 11 of the wrought iron straps being upset as shown at 1 k, 14: to properly and rigidly secure the cast steel pieces and the straps together. Each cast steel piece 13 is provided with a longitudinally extending key slot 15 adapted to receive the coupler connecting key. lhe steel castings 13 are furthermore beveled on their inner faces as shown at 16 to thereby permit the yoke to swing or tilt relatively to the coupler. To properly hold the two wrought iron straps together at the rear end and t0 furthermore provide a filler to abut the rear follower, a wrought iron clip 17 is provided, theends 18 of which are bent over and around the upper and lower edges of the straps to firmly secure them together as shown most clearly in Figs: 1 and 1. From the preceding description, it will be seen that 1 have provided a yoke of great strength which possesses all the advantages of an ordinary wrought iron yoke and a cast steel yoke which is free from the defects of each; the wrought iron straps are secured to the cast steel pieces without the use of rivets or other devices which are easily sheared; the yoke may he detachably connected to the draw-bar. by means of a key and without the necessity of a hood or box-like head such as hitherto has been used; and the yoke is such that it may be used in a. horizontal position while at the same time being de-tachahly connected to the draw-bar. Althought 1 have herein shown and described -what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my improvements, yet it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing irom'the spirit of. the inventiomand all such changes and modifications are contemplated as come within the scope of the.
claims appended hereto.
I claim: V
1. A horizontal Zyoke for railway draft rigging having the arms thereof made of wrought iron, the arms having secured thereto at the ends, separate slotted cast steel members through which'the ends of the: yoke arms pass, the crids of the yoke arms being upset to secure the castings in place, substantially as specified.

A yoke of the character described comprising two straps of wrought iron bent to form the arms and rear of a yoke, and slot ted steel castings secured to the ends of said straps, the ends of the straps extending through the slots and being headed to unite the parts, said castings being slotted to receive a coupler-connecting key, substantiallyas specified r i 3.
