RAILWAY-GARDRAFT-RIGGIIQG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed November 30, 1914. Serial No. 874,642.
clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
' This invention relates to improvements 1n railway car draft riggings.
An object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging for railway cars of simple and eificient construction and more particularly to provide a yoke for operating the gear and supporting the same. v
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices as herein shown, described or claimed. i
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a part sectional view part sideelevation of a draft rigging, showing my improvements in connection therewith. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 22 and 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of one of the yoke members.
In said drawing, 1010 denote center sills or other draft members to which are secured front stops 11 and rear stops-12, said stops each having upper and lower flat horizontal surfaces 13 and 14. The front stops 11 are slotted, as are the sills 10, to receive therethrough a coupler key 15 by which the draw bar 16 is connected to the yoke, more particularly hereinafter described.
The improved yoke, as shown in the drawing, comprises two members A A, each of which has upper and lower longitudinally.
extending arms 17 and 18 and which are outwardly turned and fit over and slide upon the horizontal surfaces of the stops whereby the yoke members A A are supported by the stops. Each member ,A is also provided with a vertically extending wall 118 at the front thereof, which is slotted as indicated at 19.
to receive the coupler key 15. At the rear end, the upper and lower arms 17 and 18 are united by a vertically extending portion 20. The lower arms 18 of each member A are provided with inwardly extending lugs 21 21, the lugs on one member A being placed out of alinement with the lugs 21 on the other member A, as indicated by the full and dotted lines in Fig. 4, so that in assembling or disassembling the gear, the members A A may be brought closer together and disengaged from the stops. Any suitable type of gear may be employed and I have shown in the drawing a friction cylinder 22, having an integral rear fol-f lower 23 extended outwardly so as to engage the rear stops 12 and rest upon the lower horizontal'arms 1818 of the yoke members A A. Mounted within the friction cylinder 22 are springs 24, friction shoes 25 and spreader 26, which are or may be of any well known construction. A front'follower 27 is provided, which is also extended transversely through the open .yoke members A A and also rests upon the lower arms18-18. The inwardly extending lugs 21-21, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3,
serve to support the front end of the friction cylinder 22. p
In order toinsure the proper positioning of the members A A at all times, that is, in
their spaced apart relation as shown in Figs. 2 and 3,1 provide spacers 28 bolted to I the upper and lower edges of the rear follower 23, each of said spacers 28 having depending side flanges 29 overlapping the follower and upwardly extended end lugs 30 which engage the inner edges of the members A. v
As will be understood, each of the yoke members A is or may be formed from a blank by the simple operations of. cutting andstamping, the horizontal arms- 17 and 18 being turned. to one side of the blank and the lugs 21 being struck to the opposite side. It will also be noted that with my improved form of yoke, I avoid the necessity of using saddle plates or carry irons since the gear is supported by means of the yoke, which in turn are carried by the stops.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination'with draft sills having stops secured thereto, of a yoke, the latter comprising two members each having outwardly extending flanges adapted to fit over said stops.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with draft sills having front and rear stops secured thereto, of a yoke, said yoke comprising two members each having upper and lower outwardly extended flanges engaging and slidable upon the upper and lower surfaces of said stops.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with draft sills having stops secured thereto, of a yoke, said yoke comprising two members each in the form of a loop and having horizontally extending upslide upon the upper surfaces of said stops,
each of said members being also provided with inwardly extended lugs at the bottom thereof adapted to support a gear.
6. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with draft sills having stops secured thereto, of a yoke comprising two side members each having outwardly extended upper and lower horizontal flanges and inwardly extending lugs from the bottom flanges, the lugs on one of said members being ofl'set relatively to the lugs on the other member.
7 A yoke for railway draft riggings comprising two members each of'which is in the form of a loop having upper and lower horizontally extending arms provided with outwardly turned supporting flanges, a front vertical wall connecting said arms, and a rear vertical portion connecting the rear ends of said arms.
8. In a railway draft rigging, the combination with draft sills having stops secured thereto, of a draw bar, a draft gear, a yoke connected to said draw bar, said yoke comprising two spaced'side members engaging and supported by said stops, and means for holdingthe rear ends of said members in spaced relation, said means comprising spacers secured to the upper'and lower edges of the rear follower of the gear.
9. A yoke for railway draft riggings comprising, two members each of which is in the form of a loop having an outwardly extending projection along the upper arm thereof, said projections being adapted to ride upon the upper faces of stops and be supported thereby.
10. A yoke for railway draft riggings having outwardly extending flanges. adapted to ride upon the upper faces of stop members and thereby support the yoke.
