DRAFT-510K137 RAILWAY-QAR DRAFT-RIGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
implication. filed January 13,
To all Mimi/i it may c071 ea n lie it known that l, Grouch A. ,lonnsou, a. citizen of the United States, residing at (Jhicano, in the, county of Cook and tilt-ate of lllinois, liavc invented a certain new and usrful luzprovoincnt in Draft-Y lrcs for lluil .vay--t lur lira lugg ng", of which the foil-o ing a full, clear, concise, and etc act doscription, rcfercncc being had to the %1C(2(}l1i} 3tlllyll1g drawings, forming a port of this specification.
My invention relatcs to improvements in draft yokcs for railway car draft rigging.
Tho ohjcct of my invention is to provide a. strong and durable draft yokc capablc of cheap manufacture and economical change of parts, and one which may employ a kcy My invention consists in providing a yoke head of novel construction adaptcd to reccivc the coupler shank, and he scoured thcrcto by a. connccting key and a detachable yoke strap secured to the said head, prclcrubly by rivets.
In. the drawings Figure 1 is an tilcvution partly in lfillgloilfllllfil section on line 1', l of io -.lof a draft yol-rc cmliodying my lllfillt-iou. togctllcr with u coupler shank or draw is an clc'mtion of .sniinliticution partially in longitudinal Section on lino 2!, of Fig. l is clcvuti't n of a further nuulification partially in longitudinal ti n on line 3, 3 of lB-i 1. Fig. l; a cros. tion on lino l of Fig. 1. Fig". 5 is a cross section on line 5, 5 of Fig. Fig. 6 is a section on line 6, 6 ofl ig. 3. Fig. 7 shows one side of the yoke head;
licfcrring to the drawings 8 is tv couplcr shank or draw bur whica may be provided at its forward and 9 with. the usual coupling devices, (not. fully shown in the drawings), and at its rcur end with the transverse slot 10 to reccivc tho coupler koyll.
12 is a, yoke head substantially rectangular in cross scction provided with the holof the yokc head are each forwardly 8X- tcndcd forniii. the, wings l5, and each providcd with a slot 16, which rcgistcrs with the slot 10 of the couplcrshank to receive the coupler kcy. The yoliic nend l2 provided with upper and lowor longitudinzilly c1;- tentl lg slots 17 and i8 rcspectively to re: melts the upper lower free or forward llatcntcd Scpt. it'll, 1912,.

ends 19 and-20 respectively of the yoke strap 21. which is preferably made of wrought iron be-ause of its strength, and also incidentally because of its cheapness ovcr cast stool. The forward ends 19 and 520 of the yoke strap arc ouch provided with suitable vertical pcrforations 22, preferably two in number, and. in alinement longitudinally of the yoko strap, registering with similar perforations 23, 23 through the ad jaccnt wulls of the slots 17 and 18th receive the rivets 24. The detachable yoke head 12 permits its continued use, and the change, when necessary, of yoke straps, and provides an unusually secure rivet connection for the yoke strap in that the rivets pass through 7 adjacent members on either side of the same thereby redoubllng the res stance of the rivets to shearing shocks and strains over thcir slioar resisting powcr in the. ordinary -tlniough riveting of draft yoke and draw bar, and at the same time permits the detachable kcy connection of the draw bar and draft yoke.
In the modifications, one of which is illustri-itcd in Figs. and 5 and the other in Figs. and c, the longitudinally extending slots 1? and 18 in the yoke head 12 are omitted. in the one modification shown in Figs. 53 and the forward ends of the voke strap 9.]. pass within thc opening 13 of the volts head, and are c: h provided with the gibs :25, turned outwardly from each ;thcr forming the shoulders 26, 26, which abut against the forward odgcs of the upper cud lower plates 27 and 28 respectively of the yoke head, to which. plates the yoke 'st-ra is securod by the rivets 24- passing through suitable registering perforations in the yoke strap and. head.
.ln the other modificution shown in Figs. 3 and 6 the forward ends of the yoke strap 21 pass without the opening 18 of the yoke head, and. are each provided with the gibs 29, .29 turned inwardly toward each other forming thoshoulders 30, 30, which abut against the forward edges of the lower plates 27 and 28 respectively of the yoke head, to which plates the yoke strap is secured by the rivets 24 passing through suitable registering perforations in the yoke strap and head.
I claim:
1. in a device of the character described, a. yoke strap and moans for connecting said strap to a draw bar, said means consieting of a hollow head slideloly connected to the draw bar and riveted to the yoke strap.
2. In a device of the character described, 2L yoke strap and means for connecting said strap to a drew her, said means consisting of a hollow head slidnbly connected to the i draw bar and provided with longitudinal slots to receive the ends of the yoke strap.
3. In a device of the character described, a yoke strap and means for connecting said strap to the draw bar, said means consisting and trensverselyelotted for the pass coupler key which slidaoly with.
