POCKET-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 26, 1912.
Patented May 6, 1913. Serial No. 706,019.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. CHARLES J. BUKOU- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved pocket guard, especially adapted for use in connection with a pocket of a garment to close the mouth of the pocket and thereby prevent the successful operation of a pickpocket and also serves to hold an object such as a pencil or a. ticket firmly in place in the pocket and prevent the same from dropping out of the pocket and being lost.
The invention consists in the construction. combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a garment provided with a pocket having a guard constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan of the guard. Fig. 3 is a sec-- tional view on the plane indicated by the line (KP-CZ of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a spring band which is of a suitable length to enable it to extend across a pocket at a point near the mouth of the pocket and is preferably made of sheet spring metal, but may be made of any suitable spring material. This guard band is narrowed at its center as at 2 and widened toward its ends as at 3 and is provided at each end with a pair of W-shaped arms 4. The spring guard or band is covered by a piece of cloth such as indicated at 5, the cloth being sewed around the spring guard to protect the hand. The guard band thus covered is arranged transversely in a pocket, near the mouth thereof and is sewed in place and the elasticity of the guard by the engagement of its points'% with opposite sides of the pocket serves to keep the mouth of the pocket closed, as will be understood, and thus prevent a pickpocket from inserting his finger in the pocket without detection and also serving to prevent an article such as a pencil or ticket from being lost out of the pocket. The sides 6 of the band diverge toward the ends of the band and the W-shaped arms 4 which connect the ends of the band are arranged in reverse relation and with the apices formed by their central portions opposed to each other. Hence, the band while normally closed by its inherent spring action to close the mouth of the pocket, is capable of being readily widened to permit the insertion of the hand in the pocket. The sides 6 of the band are provided at their centers with outturned portions 7 which form what is in effect an opening at the center of the band to facilitate the opening of the pocket.
I claim l. A pocket having a spring guard ex tending across the same near the mouth and secured to opposite sides thereof, the said spring guard comprising a pair of side mom bers and a pair of W-shaped arms connecting the ends of the side members and arranged with the apices formed by their central portions extending inwardly in the ends of the guard and opposed to each other.
2. A pocket having a spring guard extending across the same near the mouth and secured to the sides thereof the said spring guard con'mrising a pair of side members which diverge toward the ends of the guard and a pair of W-shaped arms connecting the ends of the said side members and extending inwardly in the ends of the guard and arranged with the apices formed by their central portions opposed to each other, the sides of the guard being also provided at their centers with outwardly curved portions forming in effect an opening at the center of the guard.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES J. BUKOUSKI.
