IIITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL GLUCKMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAPER Box.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL GLUGKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved and attractive paper box for packaging merchandise, and it is particularly applicable for packaging of cigarettes, cigars, crayons, stick candy and the like.
The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of my box blank before folding. Fig. 2 is a view of said blank with one section folded, and secured in position, the back of the other section still being upstanding. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view of the paper box when completed and folded. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the box open for inspection.
As shown 1n the drawings: I provide a blank having two rectangular sections of similar size and shape indicated by references 1 and 2, and a flap portion 3 having a tongue 4. The rectangular section 2 is provided with a slit 5 and both sections 1 and 2 are provided preferably with gum at the points indicated at 6 and 7. Different rectangular side connecting sections 8 and 9 serve to connect the sections 1 and 2 and the sections 1 and 3. At opposite ends of sections 1 and 2 I provide short sections 10 and flap sections 11. The flap sections 11 preferably have notches 12 cut out of their edges. At the opposite ends to the sections 11 and joined to the sections 1 and 2 I provide sections 12 each joining a section 13 having attached portions 14 and 15 on one side thereof, section 15 being provided with a slit 16 and short sections 17 and 18 on the other side thereof, thesection 18 having a tongue 19 cut out of the material of the aforesaid section 11, and forming the notch Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. March 13, 1912.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Serial No. 683,491.
12 therein referred to. To the section 2 on the opposite end is provided similar sections 13 to 18 inclusive. The sections 18 and 15 are folded toward each other, the tongue 19 inserted at the slit 16, and a closed chamber thus formed which may be fastened down by adhesive material to the sections 1 and 2 at the points indicated at 6 and 7 by the glue. The sections 11 are then folded over as shown in Fig. 2 to provide a coveringfor the protruding ends of the packaged articles, which however may be seen through the notch openings 12.
It will be obvious from the inspection of Fig; 1 that I have been able to secure by this type of box blank out of one piece a cover, two box pockets with protecting flaps with all the package merchandise entirely away from outside contamination, and that great economy of material can be attained in th manufacture of the box. I
I claim as my invention:
The herein described box comprised of one piece of material, having a rectangular front 1 and back 2 joined by a bottom sec tion 8, a top section 9 and flap 3 adjoining one of the rectangular parts, side portions 12*, one each at opposite sides of said rectangular parts 1 and 2, two portions 13, one of which adjoins each end 12 and is adapted to fold'part way across its adjacent rectangular part 1 or 2, extensions 14 and 15 for each portion 13 extending in opposite directions and away from the rectangular members, portions 17 and 18 attached to the parts 13 on the side opposite the parts 14 and 15 and of a length to end substantially on a line with a boundary of the rectangular parts 1 and 2, side parts 10 located on opposite sides of the parts 1 and 2, and ad jacent each to a part 18 and flaps 11 for such part 10, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MI OHAEL GLUCKMAN.
