FREDERICK F. INGRAM, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK F. INGRAM COMPANY, OF DETROIT.. MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
p PACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratenteareb. 1, 191e.
Application ined June' 12, 1915. serial No. 33,813.
To all whom t may concern:
'Be it known that I,`Fnnnnnrcn F. INGRAM, v
a citizen of the UnitedStates of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packets, of which the following is a specification,
lreference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The inventlon relates to packets, and resides in the provision of a novel construction packet that is adapted as a container for a small quantity of material, as for instance face powder or the like; and in the provision of a simple and efficient packet which will form a suitable advertising medium for face powder or other toilet material, and yet may be cheaply manufactured.
rIhe invention further resides in the novel v`construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packet embodying the invention, the packet being shown in open position; Fig. 2 is a similar view with-the packet in closed position; Fig. 3 illustrates the packet in partially folded position; and Figs. 4c, 5 and 6 illustrate the manner of forming the packet.
The package is preferably formed from a blank A adapted to be folded along the f line B to form sides C and D which in the folded position of the packet are parallel. Secured to the inner face of one of the sides as C is a second layer of material such as the,
card-board member E. This member is preferably of the same size as the side C and is provided with an open center or cut-away portion F forming a shallow chamber G, the chamber being closed at the bottom by the side C. In the preferred form of the invention there is secured to the side D a member H which is of a size to nicely fit the chamber G. The portion cut out ofthe member E to form the chamber G may be utilized for the member I-I;
By the arrangement so far described, it will be readily apparent that when the side D is folded upon the side C the member I-I will close the chamber G and will substani the powder in the chamber.` The amount of powder the chamber G contains and the -depth ofthe chamber may be varied as dev to not only close the open'end of the packet opposite the fold B, but also to close 'the sides of the' packet. Thus as shown, I and J are flaps formed integral with the portion yof the. blank comprising the side D and foldable along-the lines Kandv L respectively.
Secured to the end of the side C is a `Hap M "having a lateral extension N. In the closed position of the packetthe flap M is folded upon the outer face of the side D and the lateral eXtensionN overlaps the flap J, the
entension being of a contour somewhat slmilar tothe flap J. The'flap I'is then folded over the outerrface of the side C and the flaps J and N folded upon the flap I and the ends of these flaps inserted within a slot O in the flap I, though other means of securing the iiaps N and J and I in the closed position may be employed. When the flaps are so folded the open end of the packet opposite the fold B will be closed by the flap M, which is of a width equal to the width of the side C adjacent the line P about which it is folded. Similarly the flaps I and J are of a width equal to the length of the side D at the lines about which they are folded and, therefore, close the side edges of the packet. The closing of .the various edges of the packet is desirable, since ynot only it prevents any material from discharging out of the packet, but also it forms a very tight closure for the material contained therein, which of courseis desirable for toilet powder or like material.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a very thin packet is pro-l manufactured and which forms a suitable advertising medium or a suitable individual packet for guest rooms, hotels or the like.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A packet comprising two sides folded into parallelism, a chamber on one of the sides, and a projection on the inner face of the other side for closing the'chamber.
2. A packet comprising a upon itself to form sides, a member secured blank foldable A and a lprojection secured to the inner .face of the other side and adapted to fit Within said chamber.
3. A packet comprising a blank foldable* upon itself to form sides, a member secured to the inner face of one of the sides and having a cut-away portion forming a chamber, a projection secured to the inner face of the other side and adapted to it vWithin said chamber, said blank having a flap attached to one of the sides and overlapping the other side.
4. A packet comprising a blank foldable upon itself to form sides, a member secured to the inner face of one of the sides and having a cut-away portion formingy a chamber, a projection secured to the inner face of the other side and adapted to iit Within said chamber, said blank having flaps for closing all the open side edges of the packet.
5. A packet comprising av blank foldable upon itself to form sides, a member secured to the inner face of one of the sides and having a cut-away portion forming a cham ber, said blank having a iap at the end of one of the sides, and {iaps on the opposite sideledges of one of said sides, said flaps serving to close the sides and the end of the packet.
6. A packet comprising a blank foldable upon itself .to form sides7 a member secured to the inner face of one of the sides and havinga cut-aWay portion forming a chamber, said blank having flaps at the opposite side edges of one 'of the sides and having a flap at the endof the other side, the last-men- 4Vtioned flap being provided with a lateral eX- tension for folding over the flaps on the side edges in the closed position of the packet, said flaps having an interlocking engagement. i
7. A packet comprising a blank foldable upon itself to form sides, said blank hav ing a flap at one of the side edges of one of the sides, formed With a slit and having a flap at the end of the other side, the lastmentioned flap being provided With a lateral extension for insertion in said slit When the blank is folded.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
