C'LSURE FLYER VESSELS.
noaaeoa To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that ll, JACOB C. EiCHnoRzn a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of `Wayne and Slate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Closures for Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a closure for vessels and more particularly to means whereby a cover may be secured to a wide mouthed receptacle to form a hermetical joint, without the use of tools or permanent sealing means.
rl`he invention consist in the matters-hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the drawings, Figure lis a plan view of a vessel and cover provided with securing means that embodies features of the invention; Fig. Q is a view in elevation, partially broken away and in section, of a portion of' the receptacle and cover; Fig. 3 is a view in detail showing the means of Asecuring a clamping band'in position;`and Figs. 4 and 5 are views in detail showing the construction of the clamping means.
Referring to the drawings, a receptacle 1 has an exterior flange 2 around its mouth on which a closure 3 may be placed, the latter being centered by a depending annular rib 4 and being provided with an exterior flange 5 corresponding in cont/our to the flange 2. A resilient washer 6 of suitable material is interposed between the closure and vessel mouth.
A band 7 of resilient material, sheet metal or the like encircles the flanges and has a plurality of oppositely disposed marginal lugs 8 that are adapted to yieldingly embrace t-he opposite faces of the flanges 2 and 5 so that when the band is tightened around the flanges the latter are crowded against the interposed washer 6.
A pair of ears 9 are struck up from one end portion of the band and are apertured to receive the outturned ends or pintles 1,0 of a sheet metal clamping lever ll. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

mating end portion of the band is formed into a tongue l2 with a head i3 interlocking with a longitudinal slot in the body of the lever ll. rlhe tongue has an ott-set bend indicated at lll adjacent the head so that when the parts are in closed position as indicated in Figs. l and d, the parts tend to remain in that position, the line of strain coming within the fulcrum point of the lever pintles. 'llo prevent lateral movement of the end portion on which the lever 1l is fulcrumed guide ears or flanges 14C are formed thereon to yieldingly grip the vessel and closure anges.
As a result of this construction, a closure is obtained that can be applied without the use of tools and that when so applied, hermetically seals the vessel. The clamping band may be removed and reapplied as desired. Because of the peculiar construction of the band, the mouth of the vessel may be of the full diameter of the vessel as the band pinches down vthe closure at frequent intervals throughout its periphery regardless of its length. y
Obviously, changes in the vdetails of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and l do not care to limitmyself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
l claim:-
l. rllle combination with a receptacle hav ing an exterior flange around its mouth, of a lclosure therefor having a corresponding flange, a resilient band adapted to encircle the superposed flanges and to yieldingly grip them along the outer annular faces thereof, a slotted clamping lever pivotally secured to one end portion of the band, and a head formed on the other end portion to engage the slotted body of the lever, the head being offset from the band to lie against the face of the other end portion when the lever is folded back.
2. The combination witha receptacle having an exterior flange around its mouth, ofa closure therefor having a corresponding flange, a resilient band adapted to encircle the superposed flanges, a series of lugs on the margins ofthe band adapted to' yieldof theother end portion when the lever is ngly grip the flanges and force them toi folded back. 10 gether when the band is drawn tight, a- In testimony whereof(l l ax my signature slotted clamping lever pvotally secured t0 n presence of two Witnesses. f
one end portion of the band, and a head JACOB C. EICHHORN. formed on the other end portion to engage Witnesses:
the slotted body of the lever, the head being ANNA M. Donn,
oit'set from the band to lie against the face OTTO F. BARTHEL.
