BOTTLE STOPPER.
(Appl at on in d Nov 15 1901) (No Model.)
Q Vihwooea 6? c UNr'rn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK STUTZ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK R. GILLINDER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA.
BOTTLE -STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,101, dated May 1902- Applieation filed November 15,1901. Serial No. 82,385. (No model.)
To all whom (it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK STUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved construction of a bottle-stopperwhich is adapted to prevent the mouth of the bottle to which it is applied from being chipped and also to form a tight closure, the device being cheaply manufactured and being readily applied to the mouth or neck of the bottle.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional View of a bottle-stopper embodying my invention, showing also a portion of the neck of a bottle to which the same is applicable. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the bushing seen in Fig. 1 in a detached position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the neck of a bottle, having an interior annular groove B.
C designates a bushing composed of a tube or neck F, which is of rubber or other suitable material, which fits within the neck of the bottle and is provided with an outturned rib or bead D at its lower periphery, said rib or bead being adapted to enter and be seated in the groove B. The upper end of the bush ing 0 is provided with an outwardly-extending flange E, that is adapted to rest upon the upper extremity of the mouth of the bottle, so as to form an elastic or yielding cushion, upon which the shoulder of the stopper is seated, thus preventing said shoulder when the stopper is forced in from crushing or breaking the mouth of the bottle, and, furthermore, when the stopper is removed the mouth of said bottle is not exposed, and so liable to be chipped, 850., since the flange E will receive any blows or knocks that would finally strike the mouth of the bottle.
The device described is designed especially for beer-bottles, and in the drawings I have shown a stopper G, which is provided with means for attaching to a swinging bail, said stopper having a projection which extends sufficiently into the bushing C as to force the same tightly against the inner surface of the neck of the bottle and also serves to force the bead D tightly into the groove, whereby a double closure is made where said bead is forced-into said groove and also between the mouth of the bottle and. the flange.
It will be thus apparent from the foregoing that by my invention I have provided a simple device which can be cheaply manufactured and readily removed or replaced, according to requirements.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come Within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the neck of a bottle having a groove therein, of a bushing secured to said bottle, said bushing having an annular bead at its lower extremity adapted to coact with said groove whereby the bushing is secured to said bottle, and a laterallyextending flange adapted to project over the mouth of the bottle.
2. The combination with the neck of a bottle, of an annular groove therein, a bushing within said neck, having a bead at its lower portion adapted to be seated in said groove, a flange on the upper portion of said bushing adapted to project over the extremity of the bottle, and a stopper adapted to enter said bushing.
3. The combination with the neck of a bottle having a groove therein, of a bushing having a bead adapted to coact with said groove, a flange on said bushing extending over the mouth of the bottle, and an independent stopper having an extension entering said bushing and assisting in forming a tight joint between said neck and bushing.
FREDERICK STUTZ.
