[NVENTOR W ITNESSES: 527 51523 Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
STUART EDWARD BELL, OF REPRESA, CALIFORNIA.
CLOSURE FOR BOTTLES AND THE LIKE REOEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STUART EDWARD BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Represa, in the county of-Sacramento and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures for. Bottles and the Like Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to closures for bottles, jars, and the like receptacles," and its primary object is to provide a novel and highly-useful device of this character by which a receptacle may be hermetically sealed, one which may be quickly and firmly secured in applied position, one which is simple of construction, and one which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- 1n- Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional View of a bottle-neck, illustrating the application of my improved closure. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the closure.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates a bottle-neck having its upper portion enlarged or thickened and its upper end reduced eXteriorly to provide a shoulder 2 and an annular marginal flange 3 said flange terminating at a point below the upper edge of the neck. A cap 4 constitutes the closure and is provided with a horizontally-disposed annular flange 5. The application of the cap over the upper end of the bottle-neck positions its flange 5 within the flange 3 and beneath the upper edge thereof. After the cap has been a plied the flange 3 is softened by heating and t en turned inwardlyand downwardly to engage the flange 2 of the cap 4, thus securing the cap firmly in position.
The manner of securing the cap in applied position by means of the flange 3 provides an air-tight connection between the cap and bottle-neck. To remove the cap, the downturned ortion of the flange 3 is displaced by a suitab e instrument.
Having fully described and invention, what I claim is A bottle-neck having its upper portion enlarged or thickened and its upper end reduced exteriorly to provide a shoulder and an annular marginal flange, said flange terminating at a point below the upper edge of the neck, and a cap provided with a horizontallydi'sposed flange adapted to seat upon the shoulder, the flange of the neck being adapted to be wholly bent down into engagement with the flange of the cap.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STUART EDWARD BELL.
