mm STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHAN JoReE sEN, oF' LONDON, ENGLAND. MEANS FOR STOPPING OR CLOSING THE MOUTHS OF BOTTLES, JARS, AND OTHER VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1905.
Application filed December 12, 1904. Serial No. 286,520-
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHAN JoReENsEN, glass-bottle manufacturer and merchant, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at .4, 5, and 6 Bury Court, St. Mary Axe, in the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Stopping or Closing the Mouths of Bottles, Jars, and other Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings hereunto annexed and to the letters marked thereon.
The invention relates to improvements" in means for stopping or closing the mouths of bottles, jars, and other vessels, and has .for its object to obtain a simple, inexpensive, and effective device for attaining that end.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the upper part of a bottle, jar, or the like having the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3. is a vertical section of part of the cap separately. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of part of the disk and packing-ring separately. Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 1 of part of a bottle, jar, or the like, illustrating a modification in the construction of the cap. Fig
6 is a vertical section of a modified form of disk. Fig. 7 is a plan thereof. Fig. 8 is a vertical section of a modified form of cap, and Fig. 9. is a plan thereof.
In the several figures like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference, and Figs. 3 to 5 are drawn to an increased scale with respect to the other figures of the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, (t represents the upper part or neck of a bottle, jar,'or the like. 6 represents a disk, and 0 represents a The neck of the bottle or the earthenware, or other suitable material, is exteriorly formed with a screw=thread a, and the disk 6 fits upon the top edge of the neck of the bottle a by its flange-like edge or rim 6. The body of the disk 6 is dished or depressed to fit within the neck of the bottle 0,, and fitted upon and around said depression, so as to lie between the flange b and the edge of the neck of the bottle a, is a packing-ring 6 of india-rubber or other suitable inateriah In connection with the disk 6 is employed the cap 0, the rim 0 of which is threaded to screw onto the neck of the bottle a, and within the rim the top of the cap 0 is provided with an annular depression or rib 0 immediately over the flange bof. the disk 6 and which in the screwing up of the cap 0 bears or impinges by its reduced surface upon the flange Z) of the disk 5, andthereby-powerfully forces the same down onto the edge of the neck of the bottle a with the packing-ring Z2 between, thereby making a hermetically-tight joint. By causing the cap 0 to impinge or bear upon that part only of the disk I) where the pressure is actually required a much greater force can be exerted than would be the case if said cap were to bear upon a larger area or upon any other part ofthe disk, added to which the pressure is exerted at the precise point where it .is required. Furthermore, the annular depression 0 acts as a cushion and equalizes the pressure.
In the example given at Fig. 5 the cap 0 is v dished or depressed in a similar manner to the disk 6 in order to give it greater rigidity. In other respects the construction of the several parts is identical with that shown and described with respect to Figs. 1 to 4:.
In the example given at Figs. 6 and 7 is. illustrated a modification in the construction of the disk 6. In this case instead of said disk being dished, as shown and described with respect to the previous figures, an annular trough-like depression is formed therein which fits within the neck of the bottle or the, like.
In the example given at Figs. 8 and9 is shown amodification in the construction of the cap 0. In this case that part of-the top of the cap within the annular rib c is removed and the adjacent edge 0 turned down, as shown more particularly at 'Fig. 8.
By the means hereinbefore described a simple, inexpensive, and highly effective device is obtained for hermetically stopping or closing the. mouths of bottles, jars, or the like.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that whatI claim is 1. In means for stopping or closing the mouths of bottles, jars and other vessels, the combination with the bottle-neck, of a disk having a rim or flange adapted to bear upon the top edgeof the bottle-neck, a ring of packing between the top edge of the bottleneck and the disk, a screw-thread upon the bottle-neck, anda correspondingly-threaded cap adapted to screw onto the bottle-neck and having an annular depression or rib in the top thereof adapted to impinge upon the disk substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In means for stopping or closing the mouths of bottles, jars and other vessels, the combination with the bottle-neck, of a disk having a flange-like edge, a depression in the body of the disk fitting within the neck of the vessel, a ring of packing beneath said flange, a screw-thread upon the bottle-neck, a correspondingly-threaded cap adapted to screw onto the bottle-neck and having an annular depression or rib in the top thereof adapted to impinge upon the flange-like edge of the disk substantially as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
