UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED L. WEISSENTHANNER, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY.
CLOSURE FOR JARS, 8w.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. WEISSEN- TIIANNER, a citizen of France, and resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Jars, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic closures for mustard jars, or the like; having refer ence, more especially, to that type of closures in which is employed a hinged lid or cover having a peripheral recess to accommodate the handle of a spoon or similar implement.
The object of my invention is to provide a closure of simple and efficient construction; and accordingly the invention comprises a structure embodying a metallic locking ring for the mouth portion of the jar; a hinged cover on said ring; co-acting cover-retaining beads of novel formation on the cover and ring respectively; a frangible air-tight and water-proof diaphragm, preferably of waxed paper, covering the under side of the ring and the opening thereof, and a gasket on the ring in contact with the diaphragm, as will.
be hereinafter particularly described and claimed In the drawings-Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of the upper portion of a jar equipped with a closure illustrative of a good form of embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the closure, with its lid in closed position. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the lid swung open to expose the frangible diaphragm. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the closure, as on the line H of Fig. 2.
A represents a portion of a container, such as a glass jar of the kind commonly employed to contain mustard for table use; and 13 represents my improved closure for the container. This closure, in its preferred form, embodies a metallic head or cap comprising a ring 1 having a peripheral depending integral flange 2, and a lid or cover 3, the latter being conveniently hinged, as at 4, to the top of the head so as to be capable of movement upon and from the central opening thereof. The closure-also includes, in its construction, a ring or gasket 5, of rubber or other suitable sealing substance,
' which is applied to the under side of the head adjacent the flange, and a waterproofed disk or diaphragm 6, of oiled paper or other frangible material, which is snugly Specification of Letters Patent.

fitted within the flanged head or cap and in close relation to the sealing ring or gasket.
The closure above described is applied under pressure to the top of a jar or the like so as to effect through the yielding action of the gasket, a tight sealing connection between the diaphragm and the rim of the vessel, and at the same time the lower depending edge of the flange is crimped as at 7, or otherwise forced under the shoulder presented by the usual head 8 which surrounds the mouth portion of the vessel, so as thereby to lock the parts in sealing relation to each other.
By the construction described it will be seen that the frangible diaphragm effectually seals the mouth of the vessel irrespective of the opening in the head or cap, or the fit of the lid, and prevents the contact of the contents of the jar with the metallic head or cap; and yet when it is desired to use such contents the portion of the diaphragm beneath the opening may be very readily torn out or otherwise rupture-d to permit access to the interior of the con tainer.
The inner edge of the metallic ring 1 is formed with a bead 9, which projects upwardly from the body of the ring so as not to interfere with the underlying diaphragm, and the periphery of the lid or cover is correspondingly shaped to register with the bead when the lid is closed, such beads, by their close frictional contact, maintaining the lid in closed position. This construction obviates the necessity of providing an outer peripheral lid-retaining portion on the ring, and thus permits the use of a flat disk 6 of stout material without crimping or otherwise distorting its outer edge. Hence a uniform bearing surface is presented to the gasket and an efficient seal is secured. The lid is preferably provided with a projecting lip 10 to facilitate the opening of the closed lid, and with the usual recess 11 which is adapted, when the diaphragm is ruptured and the lid is closed, to receive the handle of the usual spoon and permit it to project through and above the closure.
I claim- The combination with the mouth portion of a vessel, of a flanged ring seated upon and locked to said portion, the inner edge of said ring being shaped to provide an externally projecting annular bead, a cover hinged on said ring having a corresponding peripheral rim of said mouth portion.
bead adapted to register fric'tionally With the bead on the ring, a gasket on the underside of the ring, and a frangible diaphragm of Water-proof material covering the underside of the ring and the opening thereof and clamped With the gasket upon the top o'f't'he' State 0 Signed at New York in the county and f New York this 28th day of October ALFRED L.
