CLOSURE FOR CANS AND OTHER VESSELS.

T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, TAPLEY W. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W'ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Cans and other Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art 1o 'to which it appertains to make and use the sanie,refercnce being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifica tion.
This invention relates to cans and other vessels for containing fruits, meats, or other articles of food, or any other articles which are to be preserved by being hermetically sealed; and the invention has for its object to provide means whereby the hermetic sealing may be 2o most thoroughly and efficiently carried out easily and at a moderate expense.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in certain improvements in the construe tion of the cans or vessels and the sealing at- 2 5 tachments, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed ont in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a can, showing the 3o same ready to be sealed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a can having the sealing top applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a can, showing the saine sealed; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a modification of the invention.
The saine letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designatesafruit or meat can of ordinary construction, the top of which, 4o B, is provided with the opening C, through which the contents may be placed in the can. D designates a `funnel-shaped flange extending downwardly into the can from the edge of the opening C, said funnel or iiange being 4 5 suitably soldered or secured to the top B oi' the can. The funnel or iiange D, which may be struck up or spun from sheet metal or other suitable material or be otherwise suitably constructed, is provided at the lower edge of its 5o neck or spout E with an annular inwardly and upwardlyturned rim, F, the purpose of which will be presently set forth. The said neck E is also provided with an inwardly-extending annular corr'ugation, F.
G designates a bulging or concave-convex disk, which is to be stamped or otherwise formed of any suitable ductile sheet metal, and which is provided at its edge with an annular rim or `liange, H, by means of which it may be soldered to the top B of the can directly over the opening C, which is thereby closed.
It will also be seen that the said disk is thus made to register with and cover the funnel D, which has been described above. To the nnder concave side of the said disk is cemented 63 or otherwise suitably attached a stopper, I, which is preferably made of rubber, although a good quality oi' cork or other appropriate material might be substituted. This stopper should be otsuch a size as to lit nicely in the neck or spout E ol the funnel D, with which, when the disk G is placed in position, it regl-` isters, as will be seen in Fig. 2 of the draw ings.
XVhen the disk G has been placed in posi- 7 5 tion, andattached to the coverof the can, the next step in the process will be to exhaust the air from the can. This operation may be performedin any suitable well-known manner,
the opening for the escape of the air being Sq formed either as indicated at letter .I in the drawings in the concavo-convex disk G, or, when preferred, in the top B of the can. The air having been exhausted, the can is to be subjected to pressure, whereby the disk G shall be dattened, as will be seen in Fig. 3 oi" the drawings, or even inverted, as indicated in dotted lines in the same figure. By this op eration the cork or stopper attached to the under side of the said disk G will be forced 9o into its seat in the neck E of the funnel D, where it its tightly, and its lower end will be pressed against the upturned edge of the rim F, which, together with the iiange F', will form additional seats for the said stopper, which latter will thus form an absolutely air` tight plug.
Although ,the aperture through which the air is exhausted from-the can may, as before stated, be made in the top B of the can, it is 10o much more desirable to locate it in the con v cavo-convex disk G, as shown at J, as it will Vin the lower end of the funnel D, it will of course be impossible for any air to reach and escape through the opening J, which renders it unnecessary to close the said opening by solder or otherwise, which would be necessary if the exhaust-aperture were made in the top B of the can.
It will be seen that the tops of cans that have been equipped with my invention may be readily removed in the usual manner by means cf a cutter or can-opener of ordinary construction. This sealing for a can or other vessel renders the same absolutely air-tight, inasmuch as the pressure of the external air against the outside of the ductile disk G will tend to force the same inward, thus forcing the stopper I tightly against its seat.
The process of scaling the cans equipped with my improvement is simple and easily carried out, while the expense is moderate.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings hereto annexed I have shown a modification of my invention, whereby it may be applied to jars or vessels made of glass or earthenware or the like.
J designates the upper end of the jar or vessel, which has an exteriorly screw threaded neck, K, on the upper edge of which may be placed a gasket or washer, L, of rubber or other suitable material.
M designates a cover, which is provided with a screwthreaded rim or flange, N, by which it may be screwed into position upon the screw-threaded neck, and be tightened down against the gasket or washer, so as to make an air-tight joint. rIhe cover M, which is constructed of metal, is provided with the downwardly-extending funnel -shaped ilange D', having the neck or spout E', at the lower edge of which is formed the inwardly and upwardly turned corrugation F. The said funnel may be formed in one piece with, or it may, if preferred, be suitably attached to, the cover M. Y
G designates the concavo-convex disk, having the stopper I attached to its under side. This disk is attached to the cover M in the same manner as the disk G is attached to the top of can A, as above described, after which the air is exhausted, and the disk Gsubj ected to pressure, so as to force the stopper to its scat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent'of the UnitedStates- 1. The combination, with a preserving-vessel, the top of which is provided with an opening, ofa funnel-shaped tlange extending downwardly from the edge of the said opening and having at the lower edge of its neck or spout an inwardly and upwardly turned rim or iiange, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
2. The combination, with a preserving-ves- Sel, the top of which is provided with an opening, of a funnel-shaped flange extending downward] y from the edge of the said opening, and a concavo-convex disk of ductile metal secured to the top of the can over the opening in the same, and having a suitable stopper attached to its under concave side and registering with the neck of the funnel, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. rIhe combination, with a preserving-ves sel, the top of which is provided with an opening, of a funnel-shaped flange extending downwardly from the edge of the said opening, and having at the lower edge of its neck or spout an inwardly and upwardly turned rim or flange, and a concave-convex disk of ductile metal secured to the top of the can over the opening in the same, and having a suitable stopper attached to its under concave side, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
4. The combination, with a preserving-ves sel having a screw-threaded neck and a washer or gasket placed thereon, of a detachable cover constructed with a downwardly extending screw-threaded l'lange, said cover being also constructed or provided with a downwardlyextending funnel having an inwardly and upwardly turned i'lange at the lower edge of its neck, and a coucavo convex disk of ductile metal secured to the upper side of the said cover over the funnel of the same, and having a suitable stopper attached to its under concave side, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
