BOTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,375, dated April 13, 1897'. Application filed April 25, 1896, Serial No. 589,027. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK TERRY CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles or Receptacles for Tooth-Powder and Similar Substances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to bottles or receptacles for toothpowder, face-powder, and other similar substances; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved cap or cover for bottles or receptacles of this class, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of the upper part of a bottle or other receptacle provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a central vertical section thereof, and Fig. 3 a similar section at right angles to that of Fig. 2.

y In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle or receptacle A, having a neck 13, the outer walls of which are screw-threaded, as shown at b, and said neck is provided with a cap D, having a screw-threaded flange or rim (1, and with an upwardly-directed central tubular extension 01 the upper end of which is closed, as shown at d, and mounted thereon is a tubular sleeve G, which is closed at its upper end and in which is mounted a spring I-I, one end of which bears on the upper end of the tubular extension (1 and the other on the closed upper end of the sleeve G, and formed in one side of the tubular extension 01 of the cap D is a transverse slot or opening 61*, and in the corresponding side of the sleeve G is a similar transverse slot or opening g, and the sleeve G is also provided near its lower end with inwardly-directed beads or projections g which are adapted to operate in vertical slots or grooves 01 in the tubular extension d the object of this construction being to prevent the removal of the sleeve G.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

It will be understood that the tooth-powder, face-powder, or similar substances will be placed in the bottle or receptacle A in the usual manner, and whenever it is desired to discharge a small quantity thereof the sleeve G is depressed, so that the slots or openings 01 and g will register, when the requisite amount may be discharged therefrom, and in the normal position of these parts the slot or opening 01 is closed, as shown in Fig. 3, by the lower end of the sleeve G, and neither air nor dust nor dirt can enter therethrough.

This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In the combination of a tooth-powder bottle, a bottle having a neck provided on its upper outer face with a screw-thread, a cap having a corresponding screw-thread on its lower inner face and adapted to engage the said first screw-thread, an upwardly-directed tubular extension of a diameter smaller than said cap and integral therewith arising from its upper face, said extension having its upper end closed and being provided with a transverse slot therein, and also having vertically and inwardly extending depressions in the sides thereof, a tubular sleeve having its upper end closed and its lower end opened and being adapted to snugly fit over said extension, said sleeve having a corresponding transverse slot in the side thereof, beads on the lower edge of said sleeve adapted to enter said vertical depressions, and a spring resting on the closed end of said tubular extension and engaging the inner face of the closed end of said sleeve, substantially as and for the purposes described.
