BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,591 dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed August 27, 1896. Serial No. 604,060. (No model.)
To a-ZZ whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM KAMPFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in bottles, the object thereof being to provide an article of this character which is so constructed as to prevent refilling thereof after its original contents has been removed or emptied. By the use of this invention manufacturers of proprietary compounds can prevent unscrupulous persons from refilling their bottles with spurious goods, which practice is detrimental alike to the manufacturers and the public.
The device is simple in construction and inexpensive, and it can be filled and emptied as readily as an ordinary bottle.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the anneXed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of the upper portion of my improved bottle. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View on a line cc .1: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of a plug used for closing my bottle.
In the practice of my invention I use a bottle A, of ordinary external appearance and formed integrally with the neck a thereof. At or near the bottom of said neck is a partition B, which said partition has a cylinder 0 projected upwardly from and formed integrally therewith. This said cylinder has a valve-seat 0, formed at its lower end, whereby inlet from the neck to the body of the bottle is provided, and engaging with this said seat is a ball-valve D. The cylinder C is further provided with a series of vertical openings 0 around its entire circumference, adapted for outlet of fluid from the bottle, and the upper end of the cylinder is closed by means of a plug E, which said plug has a recess (2 leadin g diametrically therethrough. lVithin this recess are placed two oppositely-disposed spring-pressed bolts 1*, which said bolts have beveled lower faces 1'', and they are maintained in a normally-extended position by means of a spiral spring G, located in the re cess c of the plug E.
To prevent tampering with the ball-valve, the bottle-neck is supplied with an annular projection a, located above the outer end of the cylinder C.
In the operation of the device the bottles are supplied to the bottler or manufacturer with their valves D and plugs E removed, whereby fluid matter can be introduced to the body of the bottle through the cylinder 0. \Vhen the bottle is filled to a line near the bottom of the disk or partition B, a ballvalve D is inserted. The plug E is then forced into engagement with the upper end of the cylinder 0, whereby its spring-pressed bolts F will engage with the openings 0 of the cylinder 0, thus securely locking the said plug within the cylinder, and owing to the tapering shape of the said openings 0 the plug E cannot be removed. After the bottle is thus filled and closed an ordinary cork can be inserted within the outer end of the neck thereof, and fol-emptying the same it is simply necessary to remove the cork in the ordi- 8o nary manner and invert the bottle, whereby the ball-valve will drop by gravity and rest upon the inner surface of the plug E, thus permitting the contents of the bottle to flow through the openings 0 of the cylinder and thence out through the neck of the bottle.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of mere mechanical construction as herein shown and described, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am 0 entitled to slight variations of structural detail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a bottle-neck of a partition formed integrally therewith, which partition has a cylinder projecting upwardly therefrom, and a ball-valve engaging with a seat formed in the lower end of the said cyl- 10o inder, and aplug secured to the upper end of the said cylinder by means of spring-pressed pressed bolts therein, which engage with recesses formed Within the said cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 2] st day of August, 1896.
