BARREL-HOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Application filed February 14, 1914. Serial No. 818,660.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. Pour, a citizen of the United States, and resldent of East St. Louis, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Hoops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in barrel hoops, and has for its object a metallic band provided with a crimped or bent-over edge and a projecting hollow stiffening rib whereby the band is given rigidity and strength.
A further object of my invention is to construct a hoop to be used in conjunction with a barrel head fastening device, wherein rods are carried by the head and project through the sides of the barrel, the pro ecting ends being housed in a loop formed 1n the hoop. The particular fastening means being disclosed in an application for patent filed by R. H. Puff in the United States Patent Office, Sept. 28, 1912, Serial No. 722,982, Patent No. 1,148,622.
A further object of my invention is to construct a hoop of sheet metal having its one edge crimpecl or turned-over and a channel or loop formed in the material and extending throughout its length, which acts as a stiffening rib as well as a housing for projecting rods by which the barrel head is secured in position, and to retain the hoop in position on the barrel by indenting the hoop, forming inwardly projecting burs.
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a barrel showing my improved hoops. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the barrel, its head and a hoop in position and the fastening pin. Fig. 3, is a detail sectional perspective view of the hoop with a part broken away.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 4 indicates the pin extending through the head, itsend projecting through an aperture 7, formed in the barrel stave, 8 indicates my improved hoop consisting of a strip of non-corrosive sheet metal, its upper edge 9 crimped or overturned forming a bead 10. In the body of the strip is formed a loop or hollow channel 11, which extends throughout the length barrel, 5 the barrel head, and 6 a of the hoop and is of such size as to'ac00II1- modate the insertion of the rods 6. These hoops or hands are made of sufficient width to properly support the upper ends of the barrel staves providing a wide contact sur- I face and by the forming of the loop or hollow channel 11, it dispenses with the necessity of boring holes into the wooden hoops commonly used so that the projecting ends of the rods 6 can be inserted. With a hoop of this construction the same is readily applied over the barrel, and the rods can be readily inserted without necessitating the V proper adjusting of the hoop to bring the channel in proper alinement with the aper tures 7 formed in the barrel stave so that the rods can be inserted. The intermediate hoops orthose located on the barrel body between the two end hoops are similarly constructed, but made narrower than those on the ends. These intermediate hoops have a crimped end 12, anda reinforced rib 13.
The rib in this instance may be either round, square, or V-shaped as found desirable and most convenient. And by means of the stiff- 'ening rib the hoop is given rigidity and strength, the same as if a wire were inserted in the loop. When the hoops are placed in position on the barrel,'the fiat portion is indented at intervals with a proper instru ment providing a V-shaped cut 14, forming a tongue or bur 15, whichis forced into the vice operates in connection with the device 2 of Robert H. Puff, barrel head fastenings. Filed Sept. 28th, 1912, Ser. No. 722,982, and allowed Dec. 30th, 1914, Patent No. 1,148,622.
Having fully described my invention what I claim is A barrel hoop consisting of a single strip of material and arranged tofit around the outer periphery of a barrel, a curved bead forming the upper edge of said hoop, a hollow loop formed in the body of the hoop and In testimony whereof, I have signed iny extending its entire length in combination name to this specification, in presence of tw with a barrel head having rods extending subscribing wltnesses.
