CLAUDE GALVER, OF CERRO GORDO, ILLINOIS.-
CLOSURE-RETAINING DEVICEJ Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed July 12, 1911. Serial No. 638,142
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE CALVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cerro Gordo, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented new'and useful Improvements in Closure-Retaining Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
An object of the invention is to provide a 'device for preventing the closure of a container from being entirely disconnected from the container and to retain the closure in closing position relatively to the container.
To accomplish the desired result, use is made of a plurality of similar rods having their relative corresponding ends'in pivotal engagement with a container and with the closure thereof and a connecting bar for releasably retaining the mentioned rods in operative position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container and a closure therefor, showing my device applied thereto, the closure being shown in closed position in full lines and in open position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the container and showing my de vice applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the rods.
Referring more particularly to the views I provide a container 10 having a closure 11 for removable engagement therewith. The container 10 is provided with a bearing 12 and the cover 11 is provided with a similar bearing 13. A plurality of similar rods 14 are provided having their ends bent laterally, the lower end of the said rods being journaled in the bearing 12 and the upper ends of the said rods being journaled in the bearings 13. Midway between the ends of the rods 14 the same are bent to form indented portions 15 and a bar 16 is provided having the ends thereof passed over the indented portions 15, the said connecting bar parts in all being adapted to movably retain the rods 14 in position relatively to the bearings 12 and 13.
As will be seen by referring to Fig. 1
when the closure 11 is positioned to close the container 10, the rods 14 connected with the bar 16 will act to position the closure on the container 10 and when the closure is re moved from engagement with the container, the said closure will be prevented from falling to the ground by the rods 14 to which it is hinged as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus at all times retaining the closure in connection with the retainer. By pressing the rods 14 inwardly the bar 16 can be re moved from engagement with the rods and the rods can then' be removedfrom engagement with the bearings 12 and 13 so that my device can be easily removed from the container at any time when it is desired not to use the same. The rods 14 and the bar 16 are preferably made of an elastic material so that the same can be easily disengaged from the container and the closure by simply pressing inwardly on the rods 14 and springing the bar 16 out of engagement with the indented portions 15. I
Having thus' fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a plurality of bearings, one for attachment to a container and the other for attachment to the closure thereof, a plurality of similar rods having their ends bent laterally and journaled in the said bearings, the said rods having indented portions midway between the ends thereof and a bar extending transversely to the said rods and having the ends thereof engaging the rods at the said indented portions.
2. In a container provided with a closure, a bearing formed on the said container, a second bearing formed on the said closure, spaced rods having their ends journaled in the said bearings and a transversely extending bar having its ends in engagement with the said rods.
3. In a container provided with a closure, a bearing on the said container, a second bearing on the said closure, spaced rods having their ends bent laterally and our- In testimony whereof I affix my signature naled in the said bearings, the said rods in presence of two Witnesses. having indented portions midway between the ends thereof and a bar extending trans- CLAUDE CALVER' versely to the said rods and having the ends Witnesses thereof in engagement with the rods at the MARION E. SHELL,
said indented portions GEO. BRADFORD.
