SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,184, dated December 15, 1896. Application filed November 80, 1895. Serial No. 570,637. (No model.)
To tZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER E. HOFFMAN, of VVhitesborough, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Insect-Powder Dusters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a perspective view of my insect-powder duster. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the framework of the duster with the covering of the bellows removed.
Referring to the gures in a more particular description of the device, A and B indicate the two sides of the bellows-shaped body of the device, which I couple together by a flexible piece of material C, preferably of heavy sole-leather. The bellows is provided with a covering, as shown in Fig. 1, and with handles D and E, secured to the sides A and B, respectively. In the part A is provided a transverse opening H, with a longitudinal opening F extending from the opening I-I out to the end of the bellows, as clearly shown in dotted linesin Fig. 2, and the en d of the opening appears clearly in Fig. l. In the part B in the bellows of the duster is provided an opening G, which extends from a point in the side B substantially opposite the opening II out to the end of the bellows, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the end of the opening G also appears clearly in Fig. l. For the ends of the openings F and G, I provide covers or lids I and J, respectively, pivoted on the end of the duster. The opening II is adapted to be closed on the outside by a cork or stopper, as shown in Fig. l.
In use the duster is iilled through the open ing II, when the cork is removed, with the insect dust or powder, and the stopper H is replaced. If the plants to be dusted are small in size, one or the other of the lids I or J is closed. The device is then operated by quickly opening or expanding the bellows, when the air entering through the passages F or G fills the bellows and agitates the dust therein, when the bellows is closed again, and immediately after being opened a portion of the dust is forced out through the passage F or G-as the case maybe-or both, and is directed onto the plants or whatever the device is being used on. In case the plants are large or a large quantity of vdust is required, both of the lids I and J may be opened and both of the passages F and G are then simultaneously in use, or both of the lids may be par tially opened.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an insect-powder duster the combination of the two partsAand B, the partAhaving the transverse opening II and the longitudinal passage F with the bellows-covering and the hinge between the parts substantially as set forth.
2. In an insectpowder duster, the combination of the two bellows parts A and B hinged together, the part A provided with an opening II and the passage F, the part B with the passage G, the coveringfor the bellows, the handles therefor, and the covers or lids I and J substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have afxed lny signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER E. HOFFMAN.
I'Vitnesses:
JOHN H. ALLYN, MILo M. RoAcH.
