116,730,171. v V PATHNTBD JUNE 2, 1903. J. A. SMITHLINB;
POUCH. v APPLICATION FILED NOV. 13, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES 1 Patented June 2, 1903.
JOHN A. SMITHLINE, OF BURLINGTON, IOWVA.
POUCH.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,171, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed November 13,1902. Serial No. 131,237. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN A. SMITHLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bu rlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use-v ful Improvements in Pouches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in pouches, and particularly to means for maintaining the mouth in a closed condition. I
The object in view is the provision of means for normally maintaining the mouth of a pouch in a closed condition, provision being made for the ready opening of the mouth.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspectiveview of a pouch embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the same. Fig.3 represents an enlarged detail fragmentary view illustratinga section of the mouth-framing and showing the controllingspring therein.
In carrying out the object of the present;
invention I employ, as indicated in the accompanying drawings, in combination with any suitable pouch 1 a framing, (referred to in a general way by the,numeral2,) which surrounds the mouth 3 of the pouch 1. The mouth 3 is preferably formed with a discharge extension or chute 4, fitting snugly within the same and extending ,a suitable distance beyond the mouth and higher at the middle than at the ends, forming projecti'ngcorners 5 5, the edges of said chute being bound by suitable binding, preferably of metal, 6 6, so that when the mouth 3 is open said chute will also be open and provide means for directing the material being discharged from the pouch to the point of destination.
The frame 2 is made up of a plurality of sections 7 7, each secured, by means of laterally-extending flanges 8, to the upper edge of if the pouch 1 by having rivets or othersuitable securing means 9 9 passed therethrough and through the material of the pouch. The sections 7 are eachof a length equivalent to half the width of the-pouch 1 at the point of its mouth, two sections being secured upon each side of the pouch and being pivotally fastened together by a suitable bolt or rivet 10, surrounding which is a coiled spring 11,
having its freeends 12 and 13 engaging the opposite walls of the respective sections, as.
clearly indicated in Fig. ,3, whereby said sections will have imparted to them a normal tendency to maintain a com parativelystraight line. The outer ends of the respective sections extend to the edges-of the pouch 1 and are pivoted together by any suitable bolt14,
passed therethrough. A cap 15 is retained by pivot 14 above the connected ends of each pair of sections 7, which cap is provided with a gripping portion 16, extending downwardly into the horizontal plane of the ends of the sections 7, whereby an operator may grasp the said gripping portion upon each edge of the pouch and pressing inwardly on the same overcome the pressure of the springs 11 and open the mouth 3 and chute 4.
The. upper end of the pouch 1, which forms the mouth 3, is preferably cutaway, as at 17, opposite each of the pivots 10, whereby the material of chute 4 during the opening action thereof may be moved outwardly to assume somewhat of a trough condition and facilitate'the dischargeand direction of the contained materiah Although I have specifically set forth the details of a particular embodiment of the presentinvention, yet it will be understood that I may deviate therefrom with reference to'the size, shape, and number of the minor details of structure without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. Among the many advantages gained by the present improved structure it might be suggested that the arrangement of the gripping portion 16 permits of compression of the meeting ends of the respective sections 7 without danger of biting or punching the operators fingers by the projecting corners or edges of the ends of said sections during the outward inner ends moving outwardly laterally and opening the mouth of the pouch l with the inward movement of the outer ends thereof and the springs 11 closing the said mouth immediately upon the release of the said outer ends of the sections.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pouch provided with a body portion open at the top, a jointed frame surrounding the mouth at the top, the mouth portion being reduced in thickness beneath the jointed portions of said frames so that it will conform to the shape of said frame in its different positions more readily and means connecting the pouch with the said frame on each side of the reduced portions to insure the proper opening of the pouch when the frame is opened, substantially as described.
2. A pouch com prising a flexible body portion, a jointed closing -frame around the mouth of the pouch, a portion of the material forming the mouth of the pouch being removed beneath the joints of the sides of the frame and means for securing the pouch to the parts of the frame immediately on each side of such removed portions, the removal of such portions preventing the crowding of the material within the joints of the frame, substantially as described.
3. A pouch comprising a flexible body portion having an outlet-openingat one point and a closing jointed frame surrounding the mouth of the pouch, the material of the pouch at the mouth being cut away for a short distance behind the jointsv to prevent the material of the pouch from crowding within the angle of the frame when it is opened, substantially as described.
4. A pouch comprisinga main body portion having a mouth or opening, a closing-frame surrounding the same, the said frame being jointed so as to open and close, the material of the pouch being out longitudinally opposite the joints of the frame, an inner chute arranged in the mouth of the pouch and joining the edges thereof across the cut-away portions, substantially as described.
5. A pouch comprising a body portion, a closing-frame around the mouth of the pouch formed with spring-actuated hinge-sections, longitudinally-arranged cut-out portions being formed in the material of the pouch opposite the spring-actuated hinges, and an inner chute covering said cut-out portions, substantially as described.
6. Ina device of the class described, the combination with a suitable pouch, having longitudinal cut-away portions at its upper end, of an extension or chute arranged within the mouth of the pouch and having its walls covering said cut-away portions, and means surrounding said pouch near the month thereof for retaining said mouth in a closed condition but adapted to permit the same to be opened, substantially as described.
7. A pouch com prising a body portion, outwardly-extending projections formed by the said body portion for constituting the mouth portion of the pouch, a spring-actuated closing mechanism surrounding said projections, means for connecting the said projections therewith for drawing the projections outwardly when the said closing mechanism is opened, the space between the said projections being arranged behind the articulating portions of the said mechanism, substantially as described.
8. A pouch, comprising a body portion formed with upwardly-extending projections at the mouth, a hinged spring-actuated frame for normally closing the mouth, an auxiliary reinforcingmouth within the said projections of the body portion, the said auxiliary part covering the space between the projections of the body portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. SMITHLINE.
