WILLIAM J. MILLER, OF NEW IBERIA, LOUISIANA.
CAN.
Application filed August lfi, 1922. Serial No. 582,756.
Improvements in Cans, of which the follow-.
ing is a specification. I
This invention relates to a can which is mainly designed for holding garbage, though it can be used for. other purposes. The general object of the invention is to provide a top which is normally closed and can be opened by pressing downwardly upon the handle or lifting upon the handle.
Another object of the invention is to so form the cover that it acts to stiffen the can and also makes a tight joint to keep out flies and other insects.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a side view of the invention with the parts in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view with parts broken away and showin the cover in open position.
Figure 3 is a similar view with the handle in raised position.
Fig. 4c is a detail view showing the pivot pin and spring.
In these views 1 indicates the can which is preferably constructed of metal with an le iron reinforcements 2 at its corners. If cesired these angle irons can be extended at the bottom of the can to form legs, as shown. at 3. The top ofthe can is preferably of curved shape and the can is provided with a pair of covers 4 which are hinged at their outer edges to the sides of the can, as shown As soon as the handle is at 5. The edges of these covers are also reinforced and the parts are so arranged that when the covers are closed they make a tight joint with the can. A pair of straps 6 are pivotally secured to each side of the covers and the lower ends of these straps are pivotally connected together and to a handle 7, as shown at 8. A coil spring 9 has one end connected with this pivot and its other end connected to a tending to hold the parts with the covers in closed position. A fulcrum pin 10 is located on the can and forms a rest forthe handle when the same is in lowered position. By pressing downwardly upon the handle it will rock about this fulcrum pin so that the ends thereof will be raised, thus forcing the straps 6 upwardly and opening the covers. released the springs 9 will cause the parts to move to closed position again. By moving the handle upwardly and lifting upon the same the covers will also be opened but as soon as the handle is released the springs will move the parts to closed position. Thus the can is easily dumped and easily opened to place material therein.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A can of the class described comprising a pair of hinged covers, links pivoted to the covers, a handle of U-shape, means for pivoting the links to the ends of the handles, springs connected with the pivot pins and with the can for normally holding the parts in closed position and a fulcrum pin on the can for limiting the downward movementof the handle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM J. MILLER.
