Description

Dec. 30, 1930. I c, AR 1,787,387
PAPER SORTING DEVICE Filed May 8, 1925 J van for Patented Dec, 30, 1 930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CUNO MARZ, 0F SCHRAMBERG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIR-M OF GUSTAV MAIER, O1" SCIIBAMBERG, GERM'ANY IPAPER-SORTING DEVICE Application filed May 8, 1926, Serial No. 107,661, and in Germany November 18, 1924.
I have filed applications in Germany November 18, 1924, January 24;, 1925, and June 19, 1925.
This invention relates to an improved device for the sorting and initial laying on one side of lett rs and similar papers received on the course of business and more particularly to a device which consists of several superimposed containers the rear ends of which are connected together by hinged joints whilst the longer sides of the containers are connected by toggle links comprising a two legged lever pivoted to an intermediate container, by means of which toggle links the containers may be lifted apart from one another.
The object of the invention consists in providing a handle fixed to a member of the toggle links by means of which handle the said member can be turned around its pivot, whereby the toggle links will be caused to align, so that the containers may be opened by means of one hand and the letters or papers may be arranged, or papers may be abstracted from any of the containers by means of the other hand.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device consisting of three containers connected at their rear ends by hinged joints and provided at the side with toggle links, so that the containers will become opened like a fan on straightening the toggle links by means of a handle fixed to the lowest member of the toggle link-s.
Figure 2 shows the same device, the containers being represented in their separated position and with the straightened toggle links and the handle pressed downwards.
Figure 3 is a view when closed, and Figure 4 when opened of a similar device, in which the handle consists of an extension of the two legged lever pivoted. to the container next above the base container.
The device shown in Figures 1 and 2 consists of the base container 1 on which rest two superimposed containers 2, 2 of the same size. The three containers are hinged together at their rear walls and are connected 1 together on one of the longer sides by means of links 29, 30 and 81 adjacent the forward end. The link 30 pivotally mounted on the middle container has two legs one of which is pivotally connected with the link 29 pivotally mounted. on the bottom container by the pin 4 and the other with the link 31 mounted on the top container. The two legged link 30 thus forms a toggle lever with each of the two members 29 and 31.
A. lever 22 is rigidly connected to the link 29 at an appropriate angle. By pressing downwards this lever 22 by means of the hand the link 29 will be turned around its pivot 4, whereby the two toggle links are straightened and the three containers opened as represented in Figure 2.
In the modification shown in Figures 8 and 4, the lever used as a handle to straighten the toggle links is formed by an oblique extension 32 of the upper end. of the two legged lever 30 mounted on the middle container. By lifting up the handle the two legged lever is caused to turn around its pivot and thereby to align the toggle links and thus to lift the containers apart from one another.
I declare that what I claim is:
1. In a device for separating and sorting letters and other papers, the combination with a plurality of containers provided with a hinge connection between their rear ends and connected at the side by toggle levers comprising a two legged lever pivoted to the container next above the base container of an arm rigidly connected to a member of the said toggle levers at an angle such as will allow by means of the said arm to turn the said member of the toggle levers around its pivot, thereby to align the toggle levers and thus to lift the containers apart from one another.
2. In a device for separating and sorting letters and other papers, the combination with a plurality of containers provided with a hinge connection between their rear ends and connected at the side by toggle levers comprising a two legged lever pivoted to the container next above the base container, of an arm fixed to the lowest member of the said toggle levers in a direction nearly parallel to the said two legged lever and adapted by pressing downwards the arm to turn the said lowest member around its pivot, thereby to align'the toggle levers and thus to lift the containers apart from one another.
3. In a device for separating and sorting letters and other papers, the combination with a plurality of containers provided with a hinge connection between their rear ends and connected at the side by toggle levers comprising a two legged lever pivoted to the container next above the base container, of an extension of the upper end of the said two legged lever, the position of said extension being such as not to overtop the upper edge of the uppermost container and adapted bylifting upwards the extension to turn the said two legged lever around its pivot, thereby to alignthe toggle levers and thus to lift the containers apart from one another.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification at Stuttgart this 1st day of April 1926.
CUNO MARZ.
