Cl. 248-147 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A garbage can cover device having a garbage can receptacle with an annular open top, an annular garbage can cover slidably fitted over the top of the receptacle, a platform for supporting the receptacle, said platform having a back wall mounted thereto, a U-rod extending over the top of the garbage can in flush relationship with the apex of the U-rod projecting beyond the forward edge of the garbage can cover, said back wall having a U- shaped bracket of resilient material with projecting flanges said legs of said U-rod being pivotally mounted to said projecting flanges of said U shaped bracket, said flanges of said U-bracket being inclined downward toward one another from a vertical plane whereby said flanges will tend to urge said U-rod downward to urge said cover into a closed position over the top of the receptacle.
This invention relates to receptacle covers, more particularly, the invention relates to garbage can covers.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel garbage cover which can be easily opened and closed firmly and positively.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a novel garbage cover which has a framework structure which can open a garbage can cover in a positive manner and which acts to retain the garbage can cover in its original shape even after extended use.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds and when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the garbage can invention.
FIGURE 2 is a top-plan view of the garbage can invention.
FIGURE 3 is a side elevational view of the garbage can invention.
FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 44 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 5--5 of FIGURE 2.
Briefly stated, the invention comprises a garbage can and cover with a U-shaped tubular rod which has rearward ends of its legs pivotally mounted to a wall bracket with the U-shaped rod extending across the top of the garbage can cover in spaced relation and is bowed to conform to the shape of the garbage can with the apex of the U-rod extending beyond the edge of the garbage can cover and serving as a handle for raising the U-rod and garbage can cover about the pivotal axis of the U-rod.
Referring more particularly to the drawing in FIG- URE 1, the garbage can cover opener invention 20 is 3,463,429 Patented Aug. 26, 1969 illustrated having a receptacle or can or bucket portion 21 with an annular cover 22 slidably fitted over the open top 21' of the can 21 a horizontal platform 23 provides a support for the can 21 and a back wall 24 is fixed to the back of the platform 23.
A tubular metal rod 25 is bent into a U-shape with its remote ends 25 and 25" slightly flattened along their inner faces 40. The intermediate portions 26 and 26 of the legs 25' and 25" have an upwardly bowed contour to conform to the upwardly domed contoured surface 22' of the can cover 27 and so as to be flush with the upper surface 22. Four rivets 27 pass through the U-shaped rod 25 and can cover 22, at rectangularly spaced locations to secure the U-shaped rod 25 to the can cover 22. Conventional pop rivets may be used to secure the rod 25 to the can cover 22.
An upper cross bar 23' is fixed along the top of the platform. A U-bracket 28 is bolted to upper cross bar 23 and the U-bracket 28 has projecting flanges 29 and 29'.
The apex portion 30 of the U-shaped rod 25 serves as a handle for lifting the U-shaped rod, to pivot the rod about the axis of bolts 29. The flattened ends 25' and 25" of the U-rod are bolted by bolts 30 to the projecting flanges 29 and 29' of U-bracket 28 and provide a pivotal connection for the legs of U-rod. The U-bracket 28 is made of sheet metal having a certain amount of resiliency. The projecting flanges 29 and 29 of the U-bracket 2-8 are each tapered approximately .5 degree inwardly, as indicated by the phantom lines 31 toward one another from a vertical plane as indicated by the phantom lines 32 so that when the U-rod and can cover are pivoted upward from their position shown in FIGURE 3, the legs of the U-rod will work against the resiliency of the flanges 29 and 29' and urge them in- Ward slightly until the legs of the U-rod pass the corners 41 of the flanges 29 and 29. After passing the corners, the resilient reaction remains relatively constant as the flanges 29 and 29' have been flexed inwardly to their full extent, once the rods have passed the corners, less energy will be necessary to move the rods from the corners further upward until the top edge 42 of the rods abut the back wall 23'.
The U-rod 25 being flush with the cover 22 and having its legs in spaced relation on the cover provide a more secure mounting of the U rod to the cover, and the apex 30 of the U-rod being along the forward edge of the cover provides a more effective and simplified handle structure for closing the cover about the axes of bolts 30 and improved leverage action for opening and closing the cover. Also, by having the U-rods secured adjacent the circumferential edges of the cover, their is less likelihood of crushing or collapsing the can cover centrally as when using the central handle.
Thus it will be seen that a novel can cover opener invention has been provided.
It will be obvious that various changes and departures may be made to the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and accordingly it is not intended that the invention be limited to as specifically described in specification or as illustrated in the drawing but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Wherein what is claimed is:
1. A garbage can cover device comprising a garbage can receptacle having an annular open top, an annular garbage can cover slidably fitted over the top of the garbage can receptacle, a platform for supporting the receptacle, a back wall mounted to the platform, a U- shaped rod having its legs pivotally mounted to said back wall and extending forward along the upper surface of the can cover in flush relationship and spaced on opposite sides of the center axis of the garbage can cover, said U-shaped rod having its apex projecting beyond the for- 10 ward edge of the garbage can cover, said back wall having a U-shaped bracket of resilient material with projecting flanges, said legs of said U-rod being pivotally mounted to said projecting flanges of said U-bracket, said flanges of said U-bracket being inclined downwardly toward one another from a vertical plane whereby said flanges will tend to urge said U-rod downwardly to urge said cover into a closed position over the top of the receptacle.
2. A garbage can cover according to claim 1 whereln said garbage can cover is bowed upwardly and said legs of said U-rod are bowed upwardly to conform generally to the contour of said garbage can.
