Application June 6, 1952, Serial No. 292,028
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to covers for garbage cans where garbage cans are supported in stands or frames and wherein the covers are hinged to upper parts of the frame, and in particular a cover mounting wherein the cover is yieldingly supported and resiliently urged downwardly whereby it may readily be elevated to place products in the can and also provides a new and unique means for removing and replacing the can without manually raising or lowering the cover by hand, whereby removing the can from the stand automatically raises the cover which remains in an elevated and set position until the can is again replaced in the stand, which operation lowers cover sealing on top of can.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for mounting a garbage can cover whereby upon release of the cover it is resiliently urged to a nested position on the upper end of the garbage can so that the can is substantially sealed.
Various attempts have been made to provide covers for sealing upper ends of garbage cans however where the cover is hinged to the upper end of a stand it is diflicult to hold the cover in position and at the same time provide means for resiliently urging the cover toward the closed position with the cover extended above the can such a in positions for placing products in the can and also for removing and replacin the can. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a resilient mounting for yieldingly supporting the cover of a garbage can whereby it may readily be raised with one hand as products are placed in the can with the other and also provides a unique means whereby the cover is automatically raised to facilitate removing and replacing the can.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a yielding mounting for a garbage can cover whereby the cover is resiliently held and whereby the cover returns automatically to a sealing position on the upper end of the can.
Another object of the invention is to provide a yieldingly mounted garbage can cover in which a disinfectant pocket is provided in the cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved garbage can stand having a yieldingly supported cover in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a stand having a horizontally disposed frame supported by legs and posts in spaced relation to a surface upon which the stand is positioned and a cover hinged to th upper end of one of the posts and provided with resilient supporting braces at the sides which urge the cover downwardly to a closed position upon the upper end of a garbage can positioned on the horizontally disposed frame.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the improved garbage can stand and cover showing a garbage can positioned on the stand.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the garbage can and stand as shown in Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the improved garbage can stand and cover.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan through the intermediate part of the stand showing the horizontally disposed frame or platform spaced from the lower end of the stand.
Figure 5 is a detail showing a portion of the upper part of the stand with the cover in a partially elevated position.
Figure 6 is a View similar to that shown in Fig. 5 showing the cover being automatically held in a semi-closed position.
Figure '7 is a cross section through the upper end of the garbage can and cover, taken on line 1--1 of Fig. 3 and showing the cover in the closed position.
Figure 8 is a section taken on line 88 of Fig. 7 showing a disinfectant retaining partition in the underside of the cover.
Figure 9 is a section similar to that shown in Fig. 7 also showing the disinfectant partition in the upper part of the cover.
Figure 10 is a detail illustrating the hinge elements for pivotally mounting the cover on the stand.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved garbage can of this invention includes a cover l0, substantially dome-shaped in cross section, a U-shaped handle ll secured to the upper surface of the cover and having pins l2 and l3 extended from ends thereof, a U- shaped yoke i l in which the pins l2 and B are pivotally mounted and which is hinged to a cross bar 15 on the upper end of a post It of the stand with pins I1 and I8, posts I9 and 20 connected to the posts 16 with U-shaped bars 2| and 22, links 23 and 24 pivotally connected to the sides of the cover with pins 25 and 26 and mounted on the posts l9 and 20 with levers 21 and 28 and springs 29 and 30, respectively, and a platform including a ring 3| with supportin bars 32 and 33 supported with the posts I E, I9, and and also with a. short leg 34, at the front.
The lower ends of the posts IE, IS and 20 and also the leg 34 are provided with clip angles 35 and the ring or band 3| is secured to the posts and leg with rivets, or the like, as indicated by the numeral 36. The U-shaped bars 2| and 22 are also secured to the posts with rivets or the like as indicated by the numeral 31.
The cross bar I5 is provided with upwardly extended ears, as indicated by the numeral 38 and arms 39 and 40 of the yoke I4 are pivotally mounted between the ears with pins or. rivets '11 and IS. The arms 39 and 40 are also-provided with eyes 4| and 42, respectively, in which the pins l2 and I3 are pivotally mounted. With the cover I U pivotally mounted'in this manner it may readily be raised and lowered with the handle II.
The cover is yieldingly held by the links, levers and springs; the upper ends of the links being pivotally-held by-the pins*25='ancl 26which are=se cured tothe'cover-with brackets 43 and 44. Y The lower ends of the links are pivotally connected to the levers '2! and 28 with pins 45 and 45 and the upperends of the springs are connected to these pins. The lower ends of the-springs are secured in openings and '48 in the posts 19 and 20 and theupperends of the levers 2'! and 28' are pivotally connected to the posts with pins 49 and50.
With the-parts arranged in this manner a garbage can, as'indicated by the numeral 5l-and having a handle 52 on one side, may be positioned :on the platform with the cover'resting -upon the upper end of the can and when it'is desired to place products in the can it-is only: necessary to raise 'the cover with the handle ll, tothe'posi- 'tion shown'in Fig. '5. To remove the can grasp handle 52 and pull can out of stand,-this action a'utomatically raisescover which remains inan elevated position as-shown in Fig. 6 until garbage can is replaced in the stand,- thisoperation lowers and-seals cover on-top of can, and inboth positions, Fig. 5 and'Fig. 6,'the cover is resiliently or yieldingly held by the combination of the'springs 4' 'with the links and levers.
The under surface of the'cover is provided with a partition 53 which is formed with" flat sides54, as shown in Fig. 8 to provide openings-55=for a disinfectant, or the like in a compartment '55 in the under side of the cover, to escape.
The disinfectant, or the like, in the compartment 5% may be replenished through an opening 51 Lin the cover, the opening being provided with a closure plate 58 that is pivotally-mounted on 5 the cover IOwith a pin 59, the pin59 being positioned in an ear 60 at oneside of the plate 58.
