A TTOR/VEY TH; COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPI! 3:0 WASHINGTON, B. c,
WALTER JAMES SYKES, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
RECEPTAGLE-GOVER-OPERATING MECHANISM Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 2c, 1913. Serial No. 803,299.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER J Aims Since,
a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have lnvented certa n new and useful Improvements 1n Receptacle-Cover-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present. invention relates toreceptacle cover operating mechanism and particularly to a type adapted for use in connection with refuse receptacles. I
ihe receptacles now generally inuse having the detachable or hinged covers are very unsanitary, in that the cover may become accidentally displaced or may be easily re- IHOVGCl by various household pets, suchas cats and dogs, and the contents of the re ceptacle are thus exposed to pollute the atmosphere andlto attract vermin and insects,
which latter have" been provento be the greatest carriers of infection and disease.
The principal objects of my present invention are to provide a device Which will position a receptacle cover on a receptacle so that the same will be prevented from be coming accidentally displaced or removed by animals, such as cats and dogs; one by which the removal or positioning of the cover relative'to the receptacle may be ac complished by the operator with little diiliculty; and one provided with means for disinfecting the contents of the receptacle at all times, thus overcoming the dangers to health caused by the unsanitary receptacles at present employed.
jects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the aclines, disclosing the guide means, the movable frame to which is secured the receptacle cover, the operating means for the movable frame, and the disinfecting means.
carried by the movable frame and communieating with the interior of the receptacle through the cover thereof. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation disclosing the mechanism associ ated with the foot'le-ver for operating the sliding frame. Fig. 3 is a top plan view disclosing more fully the foot lever and the connections associated therewith. Fig. 4 is a side elevation with the cover in a closed position. Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation disclosing the foot lever depressed and the cover in an elevated position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates a'suitable base plate preferably semi-circular in form, and to which are secured, in any suitable manner, the lower ends of vertical stanchions 2 connected at their upper ends by a cross bar 3. Slidably mounted on the stanchions is a suitable frame consisting of the tubular side members 4; which encircle the stanchions,
and which are connected adjacent their upper ends by the supporting member 5 and are also connected adjacent their lower ends by the member 6 which is bent or curved in such manner asto permit the placing of a receptacle 7 between the stanchions 2 and beneath the supporting member 5. l
The supporting member 5 carries arms'S to the underside of which are detachably connected, in any suitable manner, the re ceptacle" top or cover 9. The supporting member 5 also carries a bracket 10' to the Patentedd'an25fli9116. I
15, to a supporting member 16, and is formed at one end with a foot pedal 17 and is provided at its opposite end with a transversely extending curved bearing 18 on which operates a similarly curved bearing 19 positioned at right angles over the bearing 18, and carried by the arm'20 of a bell crank 21 which is pivoted, as at 2:2, to a supporting member 23.
with the short arm 26 of a bellcrank 27, which is pivotally supported bya support ing member 28, and carried by the long arm 29 ofthe bell crank 27 is a suitable pin 30 which engages under the member 6.
It will'be apparentthat when a downward pressure is applied to the foot pedal ofv the lever 14, that the bell cranks 21 and 27 will, 7
through their connections with the lever,'be caused to move upwardly and the pin 30 will operate on the underside of the memberf6 and raise the frame carrying the re-- ceptacle cover, as inFigs. 2 and 5. On the release .of pressure on the foot lever, the weight of the frame, receptacle cover and disinfectant container, will cause the frame ,to lower itself and position the cover over the mouth of the receptacle. It will be apparent that the cover when positioned on the receptacle, cannot be accidentally displaced or removed by animals, but may be only removed by a downward pressure on the foot lever. It will also be apparent that on pressure being released on the foot lever, the cover is automatically positioned over the receptacle, and the flanges of the cover when positioned over the receptacle, prevent the removal of the receptacle from under the cover until the same has been slightly raised.
Having thus described my invention what.
I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A closure for garbage receptacles and the like, and operating means therefor, comprising a cover, movable supportsffor the cover between. which a garbage receptacle may be placed, connecting means for the of the foot operated lever raises or lowers the covering member on said guiding means.
The other'arm 24E of the bell crank 21 is pivotally connected by a link 25 I means, a pair of spaced supporting standards projecting from a base plate, between which receptacle is adapted to be positioned a sliding frame mounted on said supporting standards, a connecting bar carried by the sliding framefcxtending around the receptacle, means for supporting the receptacle cover to the frame, and mechanism carried by the base plate and cooperating with the sliding frame for raising and lowering said frame on said standards tomove' the cover relative to the receptacle.
5. In a receptacle closure operating means, the combination with spaced supporting standards between which a receptacle is adapted; to be positioned, tubular members slidably mounted on said standards, a supporting member connecting said tubular. members at their upper portionsv thereof and to which the receptacle cover is adapted to be attached, a connectingmember carried by said tubular members, a foot operated lever, and means associated therewith andcoeperating with said connecting member for operating the same on said standards to raise and lower the receptacle cover relative to the receptacle.
6. In a' receptacle closure operating means, the combination with spaced supporting standards between which a receptacle is adapted to be positioned, members slidably mounted on'said standards, means for attaching a receptacle cover to said slidmgrmembers, a connecting arm carried by the sliding members, and means for operat ing the, said sliding member on said standards to raise and lower the receptacle cover relative to the receptacle comprising a foot operated lever having mechanism associated therewith carrying a part adapted to ride against the said connecting member.
7. A receptacle cover controlling means, the combinationwith a base plate carrying vertically extending guiding standards adjacent which a receptacle is positioned, a sliding member associated with'the' guiding standards adapted to carry. a receptacle cover, a foot operated lever pivotally secured to a supporting member carried by the base plate, a bell crank lever having a part cooperating With the frame carried by said name to this specification in the presence of base plate, and a connection between the two subscribing Witnesses. foot operated lever and the bell crank lever whereby a movement of the foot lever raises WALTER JAMES SYKES' 5 or lowers the cover carrying member or Witnesses:
