2 Claims.

This invention relates to a garbage can protector, the general object of the invention being to provide a spring actuated lever, rotatably connected to a post, for holding the cover on the can and the can in upright position, so that dogs or other animals cannot upset or get into the can which would result in scattering the contents thereof, with means for detachably connecting the lever to the cover so the cover can be swung with the lever to cover the can or uncover the same.

The invention also consists in certain other features of construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a can associated with the invention and showing the cover in dotted lines in open position and in covering position in full lines.

Figure 2 is an elevation showing the parts as they appear in Figure 1.

Figure 3f is an elevational view with parts in section of the can supporting means.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation looking towards the device alongside the can.

Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Figure 4.

Figure 6 is a top plan view showing the lever detached from the can top and swung to one side thereof.

In these drawings. the numeral I indicates a flanged base in which the garbage can is seated and while the drawings show this base as supported by a post 2, it is to be understood that the base may be placed directly on a surface of lconcrete or any other suitable surface, or it may be used without a base as long as the lower end of post 3 is firmly fastened to the floor or some substantial object. A post or rod 3 is herein shown as being rigidly secured to the side portion of the base l and extends upwardly along side of the can A and, while the post is so supported in the present disclosure, it is within the purview of this invention to anchor or rigidly secure the same to any form of base and thereby eliminate the base I. A tube 4 rotatably and slidably fits over the rod or post and, while the free end of the rod is connected to the tube by a spring 5 55 secured at one end to the same with its other end attached to a pin 6 or other suitable element carried by the tube to yieldingly retain the tube and associated elements in lowered position, the spring may be omitted without effecting the salient features of this invention. A lever 6 has one end fastened to a top part of the tube, the upper end of which is closed, as shown. Said lever has an enlarged outer part which is formed with a slot 1 for receiving the handle a of the cover A of the can. A latch 8 is pivoted to the lever and is adapted to extend under the handle a to latch the handle, and therefore, the cover, to the lever. A handle 9 is connected with the inner part of the lever for facilitating lifting the same and swinging the lever.

Thus it will be seen that by grasping the handle 9 and pulling upwardly on the lever the same will be raised by upward movement of the tube on the post and against the action of the spring. Then the lever can be placed over the handle of the cover and when released the lever will pass over the handle of the cover and the two parts can then be connected together by swinging the latch 8 under the handle. The pressure of the spring on the tube will cause the lever to press the cover downwardly upon the can and, of course, this pressure will tend to hold the can on the base. By placing the post, tube and lever, outside of the can and to one side thereof, the leverage action is increased over what it would be if the parts were placed in the can. Thus the device acts to firmly hold the cover on the can. 'Ihen when it is desired to remove the cover, the handle 9 is pulled upwardly which raises the lever and the cover and then the parts are swung to one side, as shown in dotted lines in Figures land 2 so that the can is uncovered.

Thus I have produced simple but effective means for holding a cover on a garbage can to prevent dogs or other animals knocking the cover olf or upsetting the can.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

l. Means for holding a cover on a receptacle comprising a post, a tubular member swingably fitting over the post, spring means for connecting the member to the post, a lever rigidly connected to one side of the upper end of the tubular member and having a slot therein for receiving the handle of the cover and means for attaching the handle to the lever.

2. In combination with a can and its cover and a support for the can, a post rigidly fastened to the rim of the support and extending upwardly along a side part of the can, a tube fitting over the post, a spring in the tube having one end l0 connected with the post and its other end with the tube, a lever rigidly connected with the top part of the tube and having a slot therein for receiving the handle of the cover, said lever being swingable axially of the tube on a horizontal plane and a latch pivoted on the lever for connecting the handle thereto, said latch being swingable on a horizontal plane into engagement With a standard of the handle.
