2 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to a supporting or holding device for receptacles, and more particularly to a holding device for garbage containers or the like, so designed as to prevent the container from being overturned by strong winds, roving animals and similar causes. I am cognizant of the fact that means have heretofore been provided for preventing a receptacle from being overturned. However, these prior attempts in general have not been too satisfactory. For example, these devices have been quite complex in structural detail which, of course, increases materially the cost of manufacture, thereby making it somewhat diflicult for the items to be readily available to a large class of users. In addition, the complex nature of these receptacle supporting devices have made them somewhat difficult to operate, and since they employ several essential working parts, the cost of maintenance is relatively high.
One object of my invention is to provide a support or holding device for receptacles of the character described which is not open to the above objectionable features.
A further object of my invention is to provide a receptacle support which is simple in construction and operation and which includes but two essential elements.
And still a further object of the present invention is to provide a novel locking or holding element which may be formed from a. single blank of suitable sheet material.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a novel locking or holding element which may be employed with any type of receptacle, regardless of its size.
To accomplish the above and other objects, the invention broadly includes a post which is adapted to be driven into the ground or otherwise maintained in a vertical position having slidably mounted thereon a locking device adapted to fit over the upper rim of a receptacle to hold the receptacle in a predetermined fixed position with respect to the post.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating the manner in which the holding device fits over the rim or upper free edge of a receptacle to maintain it in a predetermined position with respect to the supporting post, the receptacle being shown partly in section.
Figure 2 is a view in perspective showing the holding device in position on the vertical standard or post.
Figure 3 is a fragmental top view partly in section showing the manner in which the holding member is disposed over the upper edge of the container.
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the holding device.
Referring to Figure 1, my inventive concept broadly comprises an upright or post It) having a pointed end I I by which the post may be easily driven into the ground or other supporting medium, and a locking device, indicated generally [2, is slidably mounted on the post. While the post Ill is preferably made from metal stock and is V-shaped in cross section, it is to be understood that it may be formed of other materials and of other cross configurations.
The locking device I2 is preferably formed from a single L-shaped blank of sheet material. The horizontal leg of the blank is bent along the lines [3 and I4, thus forming a sleeve-like member 15 of triangular configuration, the internal dimensions of which enable the sleeve to slide easily along the post I ll. If necessary, the sleeve may be brazed or welded along edge IS.
The long or vertical leg of the blank is bent upwardly as indicated by the numeral l'l' forming a vertical portion l8 and thence downwardly, as shown at 19, terminating in a holding element 20 which is substantially parallel to the portion I8. The vertical leg of the blank when folded is approximately S-shape. A handle 2| is conveniently afiixed to the sleeve l5 in any manner to aid in raising or lowering the locking sleeve l5 along the post II).
In operation, and attention is directed to Figure 1, a garbage receptacle 22 having an open upper end 23 is disposed adjacent to the vertical post ID. The sleeve [5 is then moved along the post It) to permit the holding element 20 to extend into the interior of the receptacle, and it will be appreciated that the receptacle will be held in proper position with respect to the post If) between the holding element 20 and the portion 18. There is a sufi'icient gap between the portion 18 and the sleeve l5 to enable a closure member 24 (shown in broken lines), to be placed over the upper end of the receptacle.
It is thought apparent from the above description that I have provided a simple construction whereby receptacles, particularly of the garbage type, may be securely held to a supporting standard without danger of being upset by small animals, such as dogs, cats and the like. Furthermore, since the holding member is carried by a sleeve slidable on the supporting standard, the device may be easily adjusted for use with any type of container, regardless of the size of the container. In addition, the holding member is simple in structural detail and can be easily manufactured.
I claim:
1. In a support for receptacles having --a removable cover, a standard, a sleeve 'slidably mounted on the standard, a vertical member extending downwardly from the said sleeve and bent upwardly in spaced parallel relation thereto and terminating in a second downwardly extending member adapted toifit over and project into the upper end of the, receptacle, the cover. being adapted to fit between the-vertical member and the upwardly bent portion when the cover'isapplied to the receptacle.
2. In a support for receptacles having a removable cover, a V-shapedstandard, a triangular sleeve slidably mounted on the V-shaped standard, a vertical member integrally formed with and extending downwardly from the said sleeve and bent upwardly in spaced parallel relation thereto and terminating in a second downwardly extending member adapted to fit over and project into the upper end of the receptacle, the cover being adapted to fit between the vertical member and the upwardly bent portion when the cover is applied to the receptacle.
