ROTATABLE GARBAGE CAN HOLDER Filed June 28, 1968 I N V EN TORS FAY/WWW azmmm AZV/A/ M. IMF/Wm ATTOR s 3,491,895 O Patented Jan. 27, 1970 ROTATABLE GARBAGE CAN HOLDER Raymond Carl Warwick, 701 S. Walnut Lane, Rockingham, N.C. 28379, and Alvin M. Warwick, 511 South Road, Highpoint, N.C. 27260 Filed June 28, 1968, Ser. No. 740,908 Int. Cl. A47g 29/00 US. Cl. 211-78 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rotatable garbage can holder including a post or stake having one end which can be driven into and firmly anchored in the earth, and a sleeve which fits loosely and rotatably over the other end of the stake and can be used as a hammer for driving the stake into the earth. The sleeve has equally spaced projections which extend lengthwise thereof and over each of which projections a handle of a garbage can is adapted to be disposed to suspend the can therefrom and the sleeve carries a yoke curved to conform to the curvature of and associated with each projection for providing lateral support for the lower portion of a garbage can.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the invention The invention is classified in supports or holders for various objects.
Description of the prior art The prior art discloses garbage can holders of various kinds as illustrated for example by Otto et al. 3,235,094 and Mize 3,219,195. However, these are not as simple, inexpensive and practical and as easy to install and use as applicants invention.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION AND OBJECTS Applicants invention is a post or stake which can be driven into the earth with a garbage can holder rotatably mounted thereon onto and from which a garbage can can be readily applied and removed.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple inexpensive and practical garbage can holder, the post or stake of which can be driven into the earth by an unskilled person using the rotatable sleeve as a hammer so that the device can be readily installed and used, and on which multiple garbage cans can be supported rotatably in a manner that will discourage accumulation of trash or unsightliness around the same and will allow the use of a lawn mower beneath the same as well as support garbage cans with their tops intact excluding access thereto by dogs and animals.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a perspective illustrating a couple of garbage cans supported on the garbage can holder of the present invention;
FIG. 2, a top plan view of the holder itself;
FIG. 3, an enlarged vertical section on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4, a top plan view of a garbage can holder for holding four garbage cans; and
FIG. 5, a longitudinal section of the holder of FIG. 4.
The device of the present invention comprises a post 01 stake 10, which may be in the form of a sleeve or otherwise as desired, and the lower end of which may be driven or embedded in the earth 11 by a sleeve hammer 12. The sleeve hammer also may support garbage cans and accordingly the sleeve 12 is of a size to be loosely received over the exterior of the upper end of the stake or post 10'.
On the upper end of the sleeve 12 is fixed by welding or other means a cap or generally transverse closure 13 having upright generally parallel prongs or projections 14 over each of which a handle 15 of a garbage can 16 is adapted to be engaged. The garbage can or receptacle may be of metal, plastic, or other material and may have a removable cover 17. In order to maintain the garbage can 16 in a substantially fixed relation relative to the sleeve 12, a curved yoke or similar lateral support 18 is welded in substantially spaced relation from each of the prongs 14.
The garbage can holder illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 is designed to support two garbage cans oppositely disposed in balanced relation, and rotatable with the sleeve 12, and the yoke members 18 may be welded directly to the sleeve 12 or not as desired.
If it is preferred to support four cans instead of two, a slightly diiierent transverse closure or cap 20- may be provided fastened to the end of the sleeve 12, the same as in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, by welding, or in any other desired manner, and this transverse closure or cap may have four equally spaced prongs or projections 21 each for the reception of a garbage can. Also yokes 18 may be used and instead of their being directly welded to a sleeve 12, as in FIG. 1, since there are four they will have to be spaced farther apart and for this purpose a disk 22 with a central opening 23 may be provided, such disk being fixed to the sleeve and to the yokes 18 by welding or by other desired means.
The garbage can holder of the present invention 1s composed of two separate parts, namely a post or stake and a driving and supporting structure telescoped over the upper end of the same and having a transverse cap with prongs or projections 21 onto each of which the handle of a garbage can can be applied and with lateral supporting means spaced downwardly near the lower end of the sleeve for giving lateral support to the lower ends of the cans.
It will be apparent that since the device is of steel it would be strong and durable with no tools needed to install, the rotatable sleeve being applicable onto the post and utilized to hammer the post into the earth. Also when the garbage cans are in place on the support they may be rotated with minimum effort to afford access beneath the same so that a lawn mower may be utilized to cut grass close to the post on all sides, thus eliminating the necessity for removing the containers from a stationary non-revolving position, or leaving grass uncut beneath the containers while at the same time not aifording a place for the reception of papers, leaves, or other waste about the base of the holder. Further, due to its mounting, when nudged by a dog or other animal, the holder for the cans will revolve, thus deterring animals from obtaining access, the animal not being able to find a fixed support for its front legs which is necessary in order to nudge the lid with its nose. Also, due to its strength the holder is substantially indestructible.
What is claimed is:
1. A garbage can holder comprising the combination of a stake which can be driven into the earth and a hammer-forming sleeve telescopically and rotatably received over the end of said stake and reciprocable endwise for driving said stake into the earth, a cap fixed over and across the upper end of said hammer-forming sleeve and having spaced-apart opposed generally upright projections over which the handles of garbage cans can be applied by direct downward movement and from which said handles can be removed merely by lifting, and means attached to said sleeve and associated with each projection in spaced axial relation thereto for providing lateral support for the lower portion of a garbage can from said sleeve.
