My invention relates to improvements in garbage can and cover keepers.

An object of this invention is to :provide novel means for keeping a garbage can .in .a predetermined position and positively preventing the same from being upset.

Another object of this invention is to provide novel means for anchoring the cover of a garbage can and for holding the same in a raised position when removed from the garbage can.

A further object of this invention isto provide novel keeper means that is readilyadjustable for garbage cans and their .covers of different sizes.

Other objects of'this invention will .beapparent from the following description, reference being had to the drawing.

To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devicesand combination of devices hereinafter described anddefined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawing:

Fig. 1 is an elevational .viewof the invention, together with a garbage can and cover, some parts being shown in difierent positions by means of broken lines;

The numeral 1 indicates a garbage can having a pair of hinged loop-like side handles 8 and a displaceable cover 9 provided with a fixed handle ill on the top thereof.

Referring now in detail to the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the numeral ll indicates a heavy pear-shaped cement base for the garbage can 1. On the rear or small end portion of the base H is a tubular post l2 connected to a horizontal pipe section l3 by an elbow M. This pipe section l3, elbow I4 and connected end portion of the post 12 are embedded in the base II and rigidly hold the post l-2 in-an upright *position back of the garbagecan' l.

Forming an extension'ofthe post 1 2 is abody member I5, in the form of a :channel bar, the flanges of which are turned forwardly. The post l2, at its upper end portion;extends-intothe body member l5 at its lowerend portion and is -de tachably secured thereto by a =nut-equipped bolt 16. This bolt l6 extends-through aligned holes in the post I 2 and'the back-ofcthe' body-member.

The garbage can I is d'e'tachably'oonnected to the post l2 by a keeper I 1 comprising a horizontally disposed member 48 havingat one "end a long finger i9 and'at its other'enda short finger 20. These fingers i9 2ll extend, one upwardly and the other downwardly. The-'keeperlfl isTeversible to position either'on'eof the fingers-i 9- 20 upwardly and'the other downwardly. The'keeper I! is formed of a single fiat bar andthemember l8 rests on the top of the post 12 and extends outwardly therefrom between the flanges of the body member Hi.

When the keeper -I1 is positioned, as shown in the drawing, its long finger l li projects upwardly through one of the garbage canhandles 8, andthe short finger .20 is interposed between the post I2 and the back of the body member 15. The keeper 'llis rigidly-secured to thepost |2 by'the bolt l6 which extends'throughahole 2| "in the short finger 20. When' the'keeper 11 isreversed from its position shown in thedrawing, the bolt 16 extends through a hole -22 in the longfingerWB.

The purpose of making the fingers Iii- 20 of different length is to-accommodate the keeper W to garbage cans in which the-handles are positioned different distances from thebottom-of'said can.

To detach'the garbage can 'l' irom' the keeper l7, it is only necessary'to 'lift the same sufficiently to=carry the handles 8 above the long finger '19 or the;short finger 20 -when"the=keeper W is reversed.

The garbage can cover 9 is attached to a pivoted keeper arm 23 on the member l5 and held raised thereby, when lifted from the garbage can 1. This keeper arm 23 is in the form of a channel bar, the flanges of which are turned downwardly. The keeper arm 23, at its inner end portion, extends between the flanges of the body member I5 and is connected thereto by a pivot pin 24. This pivot pin 24 extends through vertical slots 25 in the flanges of the body member l5 and longitudinal slots 26 in the flanges of the keeper arm 23.

The cover 9 is adjustably and detachably secured to the keeper arm 23 by positioning its handle In between the flanges of said arm and connecting the same thereto by a pair of nutequipped bolts 21. These bolts 27 extend through any two pairs of aligned holes 28 in the flanges of the keeper arm 23 and the handle on the cover 9. The longitudinally spaced holes 28 permit the cover 9 to be attached to the keeper arm 23 in difierent adjustment from the body member [5. On the top of the keeper arm 23 is a handle 29 by which the arm may be manipulated.

To remove the cover 9 from the garbage can 1, the arm 23 is swung upwardly by means of its handle 29 and then moved endwise downwardly with its lower end positioned against the back of the body member l5, see Fig. 2. The slots 25 and 2B permit this adjustment of the keeper arm 23. The inclination at which the cover 9 may be held suspended by the keeper arm 23 may be varied, at will, by moving the arm 23 different distances downwardly in the body member I5.

Referring to the invention as mounted in Fig, the base II and the post l2 are dispensed v and body member 65 secured to the side c, .l building 39 by a pair or screws 3!, one of which extends through the back of member in piece of the bolt l6, and the other extends through a hole 32 in the back of the body member iii near the upper end thereof.

Obviously, from the above descripti n, dent that the keeper ll will hold garbage can in definite position relative to the post and posh tively holds the same from being upset. The keeper arm 23 likewise anchors the cover of garbage can to the post, and it is oniy necessary to lift said arm to remove the cover from the can and hold the same suspended over said cam while depositing garbage therein or when removing the can to empty the same. When replacing the cover on the can, a slight outward endwise movement of the keeper arm 23 will release the from its engagement with the back of the body member I to permit the same to be lowered.

When the keeper is mounted, as shown in Fig. 6, a suitable base, not shown, may be provided for the garbage can.

The Word handle is herein used in a broad sense to cover any similar member on the side of a garbage can to attach the keeper thereto.

From What has been said, it will be understood that the invention described is capable of modification as to details of construction and arrangement within the scope of the invention herein disclosed and claimed.

What I claim is:

1. In a device of the class described, an upright channeled body member applicable to a fixed support, a horizontally disposed keeper arm, one end portion of which extends between the flanges of the body member, said body member having upright slots in its flanges, said keeper arm having longitudinal slots in its flanges intersecting the slots in the body member, a pivot pin extending through said intersecting slots, and means on the keeper arm for deta-chably securing the cover of a garbage can to the keeper arm, said keeper arm being free for endwise sliding engagement with the back of the body member to hold the same in a raised inclined position.

2. A keeper for a garbage can comprising a bar having its end portions laterally offset, the one from the other, and means for attaching the lower end portion of the bar to a support, the upper end portion of the bar being insertable through a handle on the side of the garbage can at the time the garbage can is being lowered onto a support.

3. A keeper for a garbage can comprising an endwise reversible bar having its end portions laterally ofiset, the one from the other, one of said portions being relatively long and the other relatively short, and means for attaching the lower end portion of the bar to a support, the upper end portion of the bar being insertable through a handle on the side of a garbage can at the time the garbage can is lowered onto a support.

4. In a device of the class described, an upright channel bar applicable to a support, a horizontally disposed arm having one of its end portions extended between the flanges of the channel bar and attached thereto for compound pivotal and endwise movement, said arm being movable into a raised inclined position with its inner end engaging the channel bar as a base of resistance and holds the arm where positioned, and means for attaching the cover of a garbage can thereto.

5. The structure defined in claim 4, further including a keeper for the garbage can the form of an upright bar, the end portions of which are laterally offset the one from the other, the lower end portion of the bar being between the flanges of the channel bar and rigidly secured relative to said bar, the upper end portion of the bar being insertable through a handle on the side of the garbage can at the time the garbage can is being lowered onto a support.
