cnrrecnn sron'r new cover. ornnarrne anti). IQQQKINQ MEANS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Lmrorn J DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle. Creek,-Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Receptacle Supports and Cover Operating and Locking Means, of which the following is a specification. Y 1
This invention relates to improvements in receptacle supports and cover operating and locking means.
My improvements are specially designed by me for use as garbage can or receptacle holders, and T have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing adapted for such purpose. My invention may, however, be readily embodied in structures designed for other purposes. j
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved receptacle holder and cover operating and locking means. Second, to provide an improved receptacle holder and cover operating and locking mechanism, which is adapted to lock the receptacle upon the support, when the cover is closed. Third, to provide an improved structure, embodying these advantages, which is comparatively. simple and economical to produce and easy to operate.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
T accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. I
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention with a receptacle thereon, the cover being shown in its' raised position by dotted lines. Fig. TI is a detail front perspective view of the structure shown in Fig. I with thereceptacle and cover removed. Fig. HT is an enlarged detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. Tl.
Fig. TV is an enlarged detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line H of Fig. H.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are Specification of Letters Batent.
P ten ed Ma t is. 19150 Application filed. January 28, 1914-. Serial No. 81%,9845.
taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing the supporting frame, in the structure illustrated, comprises a pair or crossed base members 1 and 2 and an upright 3 extending upwardly from the rear end of the base member 2 and formed integrally therewith. These members are formed of light bar iron.
The receptacle supporting bars t and 5 are arranged in a horizontal position, the bars being crossed above and resting upon the apex of the base members 1 and 2, to which they are secured by the rivet 6. The rear end of the bar 5 is turned down at 7 and secured to the upright. The front end of the bar 5 and the ends of the bar 4 are provided with downturned portions 8, which are secured to the ends of the base members by suitable rivets. The standard is braced by the braces 9, the lower ends of which are secured to the ends of the base member 1. The bars 4: and 5 are folded upwardly at 10 to provide receptacle retaining members. The receptacle 11 is arranged onthe bars between these members, as shown in Fig. T. The receptacle cover 12 is hinged to the upper end of the upright. The cover hinge comprises the cover member 13 secured to the cover by means of the attachment 1% and the upright member 15, which is secured to the upright by the-bolts 16 and 17 engaging the slots 18 in the upright. By means of this connection for the hinge the same may bev adjusted vertically to accommodate cans of different heights.
The cover is locked in its closed position by the latch .19, which, when the cover is closed, engages the head of the bolt 17 which is formed as a keeper 20. The latch 19 is formed of a Loop of wire and embraces the standard, and is connected to the cover hinge member 13 by means of the pin 21. The
latch is released and the cover raised by the foot lever 22 which, in the structure shown, is annular in form and pivoted. at 23 on the upright portions 8 of the bar 4.
Alinli 2% is pivoted at 25 on the rear end of the lever, the link being arranged through a slot in the rear end of the bar 5, whereby it is guided and supported. The upper end of the link is slotted at 26 and arranged through a slot 27 in thehinge member 18.
The pivot 21 is passed through the slot 26 so that the latch has a lost motion connection to'the cover. The link 24: is provided the receptacle is entirely'free and may with a trip pin 28, engagesthe latch 7 during the initial movement of the foot lever raising the latch and releasing the same so that by a continued movement of the foot lever the cover is raised." When the lever is released the cover falls into place and the latch automatically engages with its keeper. When the cover is closed and locked by the means of the latch the receptacle is locked upon its support. When the cover is raised lifted from its support.
This structure is particularly desirable for garbage receptacles. In such the cover is locked and the receptacle locked upon the support, so that it cannot be upsetor the cover isplaced by dogs. At the same time the receptacle is entirely free when the cover is raised so that it may be readily changed.
a I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in the form in which I have embodied the same.
I havenot attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable' those skilled in the art to employ and adapt my invention as may be deemed desirable.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by I Letters Patent is:
' 1. In a structure of the class described the combination of a receptacle support, an upright on said support, a receptacle arranged on said support, a cover for said receptacle, a hinge comprising aslotted mem: .ber secured tothe cover and a member secured tosaid upright for. vertical adjustment-thereon, a latch ivoted on said cover hinge member and em racing said upright,
a keeper on said upright with which said latch engages when the cover is closed, a foot lever pivoted on the receptacle support, a longitudinally slotted link pivotally mounted on said lever and arranged through said cover hinge member, a pin on'said cover hinge member engaging said slot in said link and constituting the pivot for said latch, and a trip on said link adapted to engage said latch during the initial movement of said lever.
2. In a structure of the class described the combination of a receptacle support, an upright on said support, a receptacle arranged on said support, a cover for said receptacle,
'a hingecomprising a member secured to the cover and a member secured to sa1d upr1ght,-
a latch pivoted on said cover hinge member, a
the combination of a receptacle support, an 70 upright on said support, a receptacle arranged on said support, a cover for said re ceptacle hinged to said upright, a latch pivoted on said cover hinge member, a keeper on said upright with which said latch engages when the cover is closed, a foot lever pivoted on the receptacle support, a link pivotally mounted on said lever and having a lost motionconnection with said cover, and
a latch releasing trip on said link adapted to engage said latch during the initial movement of saidlever. o
4. In a structure ofthe class described the combination with a frame adapted as a receptacle support, a receptacle cover hinged to said frame, a cover latch engaging when the cover is in its closed position, whereby the cover is locked in its closed position and the receptacle retained upon the support, and a cover lifting lever having a lost motion connection to said cover and operating connections with said latch, whereby the latchis disengaged during the initial move ment of the lever and the cover raised on the further movement of the lever.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto setmy hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
LINFORD J. DAVIS. [L.s.] Witnesses:
Es'rnrm DUNBAR, Manon MGKEE.
