United States Patent o SANITARY GARBAGE RECEIVER Andrew S. Knapp, St. Louis, Mo., assignor to Knapp- Monarch Company, St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Delaware Filed Aug. 4, 1958, Ser. No. 752,716 2 Claims. (Cl. 220-17) This invention relates to a sanitary garbage receiver of the step- 11 type having a foot treadle for opening the lid.
One object of the invention is to provide novel handle means for the inner container of a garbage receiver of the type mentioned which eliminates the usual bail handle and its disadvantages such as a tendency to pull loose and thereby permitting spillage of the contents, and difiiculty in grasping the bail for the purpose of removing the inner container from the outer housing that serves as a support therefor, the inner container being provided with opposite hand holes in my disclosure instead of a bail.
Another object is to provide means operated by the' foot treadle that opens the lid of the outer housing toelevate the inner container so that the hand holes thereof are exposed for grasping and removal of the inner container from the outer housing being thereby facilitated.
Still another object is to provide a simple leverage arrangement including one lever for raising the inner container which is operatively related to the foot pedal lever so as to be operated thereby and simultaneously therewith for elevating the inner container as desired each time the foot pedal is depressed.
With these and other objects in view, my invention con sists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my sanitary garbage receiver, whereby the objects above contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in detail on the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through a sanitary garbage receiver embodying my invention and showing the parts in the operated position (a foot pedal depressed for both raising the lid of the outer housing and elevating the inner container so that it may be removed);
Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view showing the parts in their normal position, some parts being broken away to conserve space on the drawing;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation, partially in section to show the lever and link arrangement for accomplishing elevation of the inner container as illustrated in Fig. 1.
On the accompanying drawing I have used the reference numeral to indicate a cylindrical outer housing formed of sheet metal and open at the top and bottom. A U- shaped hinge bracket 12 extends therefrom for support ing a pivot rod 14 upon which a second U-shaped hinge bracket 16 is pivoted. The bracket 16 supports a lid 18 for the outer housing 10 and this lid is normally in the closed position of Fig. 2 under the action of gravity.
A primary lever 20 is provided with a foot pedal 22 and is pivoted at 24 to an inverted U-shaped bracket 26 which is secured to a channel-shaped stationary cross bar 28. A vertical link 30 has its lower end pivoted to the lever 20 by means of a reduced end of the lever loosely located in a slot 32 of the link. The upper end of the link is pivoted (loop 34 in slot 36) to the hinge bracket 16 whereby depression of the pedal 22 from the Fig. 2 to the Fig. 1 position will elevate the link 30 and thereby open the lid 18 as to the position illustrated in Fig. 1. The link 30 extends loosely through a guide slot 31 of the cross bar 28. The foregoing is usual construction for sanitary garbage receivers of the class herein disclosed.
The usual type of garbage receiver also has a bailed inner container which is normally tubular in character and provided with a bottom wall. I provide such a container 38 but it diifers from the usual container in that the bail is eliminated and hand holes 40 are provided instead. The container 38 may be molded of plastic or fibre and its wall is preferably tapered as illustrated to facilitate positioning of the inner container with respect to the outer housing 10. An annular lip 42 extends around the periphery at the upper edge of the inner container for support on an annular reinforcing head 44 of the housing 10 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The tapered shape of the container 38 also permits close nesting of the containers during manufacture and storage to be had to them for removing the inner container when emptying thereof is desired. I accomplish this by the provision of a lever 46 formed of a strap of sheet metal with a reinforcing bead longitudinally thereof and having a pivot eye 48 on a pivot rod 50 supported by the cross bar 28. The lever 46 has its opposite end reduced and loosely received in a slot 52 of the link 30 whereby it is elevated simultaneously with the treadle action imparted to the link 30 by stepping on the foot pedal 22, as obvious by a comparison of Fig. l with Fig. 2.
The lever 46 is provided with a hump 54 adapted to contact the bottom of the container 38 and lift it from the position of Fig. 2 to the position of Fig. l with the hand hole 40 accessible above the upper edge of the outer housing 10, or the hand holes 40 may be eliminated and the lip 42 used to grasp the inner container when lifted to the Fig. 1 position whereupon the inner container may be completely removed from the outer housing 10 and its contents disposed of.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my sanitary garbage receiver without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may reasonably be included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a sanitary garbage receiver, an outer housing, a hinged lid thereon, a foot pedal operated lever pivoted at its center, having a foot pedal on one end and a link operatively connecting its other end to said lid for opening the same, an inner container removably positioned within said outer housing, said inner container having a lip around its upper edge to rest on the upper edge of said outer housing and being supported thereby, said inner container having hand grasp holes immediately below said lip and thereby normally inaccessible when said inner container is in said outer housing, and means for elevating said inner container to expose said hand grasp holes comprising a second lever pivoted at one end, contacting the center of the bottom of said inner container intermediate its ends and operatively connected at its other end with said link to elevate said inner container when said foot pedal is depressed and said lid is thereby opened.
2. In a sanitary garbage receiver, an outer housing, a lid hinged at one side thereto, a primary lever from side to side in said housing and terminating at one end in a foot pedal at one side thereof, a link operatively connecting the other end of said primary lever to said lid for opening the same, said primary lever being pivoted in said housing intermediate the ends of the lever, an inner container positioned in said outer container, and means for elevating said inner container comprising a secondary lever pivoted to one side of said outer housing and having its opposite end pivotally connected to said link, said secondary lever having means intermediate the ends thereof for engaging the center of the bottom of said inner container for elevating the same when said primary lever and said link are operated to open said lid.
